Thanks, Pharg, for stirring the pot. We now do, in the lab, what nature has done since Earth began and what human selection has done for thousands of years – we modify the genetic makeup of plants and animals. How else did the wolf become the Golden Retriever. Faster is better and the lab is best because starvation is something to be avoided.

But you have a point – better to not confuse things. I am confused enough for everyone.
As to the price of pizza at Moya’s, I usually just make my own 🙂 Want a slice?

I have to admit that I still have some confusion (although you have helped). My biggest concern is being fair to my gardener and housekeeper. Should I, at this point, pay them in dollars or colones. It sounds as if paying in colones is to my benefit but will hurt them. I want to do what is best for my employees, so it sounds like paying them in dollars is best. Right?
VictoriaLSTMemberThank you Lyncota. Its fun to write too 🙂
Unfortunately, those frozen berries are only good smushed up in smoothies. They are terrible in pies.
VictoriaLSTMemberIt took a friend of ours 2 years and $5,000 to bring a bird into the country. You may be up against some steep odds with a raccoon.

Costa Rica gets upwards of 2 million tourists per year. Do the math.

That figure of 2 million “tourists” includes 400,000 Nicaraguans. It may also include all of us who live here but have to leave every 90 days….

VictoriaLSTMemberGood advice Finca. When you have to hire people for work you intended to do yourself, the costs eat up profit. We have a place in Nuevo Arenal that has gone through 3 sets of owners in less than 3 years. The current owners are struggling.
VictoriaLSTMemberwe used Charles Zeller’s company to ship a car and a boat. Great service.Web Results

http://www.solutionscostarica.com/relocating/VictoriaLSTMemberWe came to CR in 2012 to look at a house on Jaco Beach. After 3 days of looking at costs (electric, etc), watching all the tourists (as opposed to permanent residents), noticing that the sea air was already corroding metal (3 year old railings on decks), we headed to Nuevo Arenal. After looking at similar costs and 5 hours of seeing homes, we bought our home. The lake are is amazing. Check it out.
VictoriaLSTMemberPharg, I loved reading about your experience (good thing it wasn’t fire ants).
I have recently used a mix of baby powder, hot pepper powder and some boric acid powder which seems to work. I spilled some near the entrance and returning ants would not cross it. If I find a big nest though, I am going to try that gasoline trick.
VictoriaLSTMemberAnd be careful. Have a written contract whatever you decide. Make sure that no one is able to squat on your land because they can then claim squatter’s rights – a bad situation for you.
VictoriaLSTMember
I see some of you take as gospel the information in the article that was linked. And why wouldn’t you when the author’s bio as posted on that very same article says that this about him?:
Matt Chilliak hails from Saskatoon, Canada, and has an honours degree in political studies from the University of Saskatchewan, with minors in economics and Spanish. He also holds certification from Fine Art Bartending School. He has traveled throughout Latin America, to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Panama.
…which apparently makes him an expert on Costa Rican government fiscal policy.

Oh Swags, I am not talking about his map. I am talking about Solis’ speech and policies.VictoriaLSTMemberWell, as an edumakated expat, I disagree with your map.
However, you are correct that the “goose” will fly away if they initiate a new tax plan to balance the budget on the backs of expats. Up here in Nuevo Arenal, the Colono is expanding because of demand by expats. Millions of dollars flows into the local banks in Arenal in the form of Social Security checks every year. CR needs to fix its pension system and enforce its current tax structure and laws or Panama and Nicaragua will start looking pretty good.
