I have been reading and participating in this forum for about 4 years now. Over that time, I have come to believe the host to be a sincere and honest individual who oversees a fair and responsible monitoring of the forum. The sentiment that keeps me coming here, and I suspect most of the other regulars, is the obvious and sincere love that Scott has for the theme of this forum, Costa Rica.

Whether or not the forum assists in his business, I have never had the impression that business was the only or even the main motive for its creation or its continuation.
I have been a part of this site for about 5 years as well and I agree with Sprite. Scott has a love for the country and a sincere desire to assist others to find their way if that is what they want to do. Of course he has to make money some how so I don’t find it a bad thing if indeed he is marketing certain businesses. My opinion is that he researches the businesses that are mentioned on this site and would not intentionally steer the site members in the wrong direction. If all members are allowed to advertise all their businesses as well, we wouldn’t know what to trust and what not to trust. In either case, a person should do their own research when planning to make such a move and not rely on any one person or site anyway.

NOTHING is holding me back. My husband are working to get all our ducks in order before moving and have a 5 year plan (we’re in our 30’s). We have to get a savings in order to buy a property is the main thing. Then, we want to run a small B & B type place where we can hire locals, meet new people and support ourselves. Of course, we want to be sure and do everything legally as well.

We can’t wait to join you all down there!

Well, I see this discussion has gone on for some time…so I have just a quick note. I have been with this site for about 4 years, I think. My husband and I hope to move to CR sometime in the next 5-10 years. We are in our 30’s. Anyway, Now that I am a member and find the value in this site, I may pay to have access to certain areas. However, I would not have paid in the begining when we first started “dreaming”. Just my perspective.

Thank you for the information so far. We have been the Caribbean several times and love all of it in different ways. We are actually spending 10 days along the coast. We will be staying somewhere between Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva. We fly in at noon and want to get as far as Cahuita for the first night. We should be able to catch a 2pm or 4pm bus if they run somewhere around that time.

I found some bus schedules online at “costaricareisen.com/info/busse_eng.htm” but I cannot tell if that information is current.

We are so excited to return; have been coming 1-2 times/year since 2005 and have met some wonderful people. We hope to retire in Costa Rica within about 5 years. By the way, I love this website and receiving the newsletter in my email!

My husband and I have had a good experience with Solid Car Rental company also. The process was no more difficult that in the states. We also have found great success with homes for rent by owner. They can be in the price range you mention and anywhere from rustic to fancy. We stayed in a house south of Domincal for $125/night and it had a pool!!!! Have a great time on the trip.

My husband and I stay at the Gran Hotel Costa Rica, in downtown San Jose. It is a good chance to see the downtown area without going to far out of your way. The National Theatre can be seen from your room. They have a 24 hour restaurant that is quite nice, a gym and free internet access. It is safe (of course, always be smart) and the staff are extremely professional. The rooms are always crisp and clean. The prices start around $70.00.

I would imagine the more foreign money there is in a particular area, the more expensive things will be. This is also true of any “tourist” area. I grew up in a medium town in the U.S. that relies on tourism. This meant it cost more to do everything.

In an area where people (local and other) know there is money, of course there will be more theft. Again, this is true everywhere.

Things like this can happen anywhere. The important thing is to be kind to those around you, keep an eye on your stuff and be smart.

I can’t wait to move to Costa Rica.

Have you visited the Caribean coast? Limon, Puerto Viejo etc.?? I would imagine that is the closest to SOUL.

Has Terry made it to C.R.? My husband and I are starting the process also of relocating from Michigan to the Caribe coast. We have a dog and we looking into the possibility of driving the Pan Am highway. Hope to hear from Terry and I’m glad I found this website through Scott’s book. -Melissa-
