Thanks for the info. I wanted a listing in general for future use but specifically I am looking for a gp, endocrinologist, surgeons (general) dermatologists, gyns to name a few primarily in the Central Valley area where I hope to settle.

Also, I couldn’t seem to find out what is required to bring prescriptions I am currently taking with me when I arrive, they are in the official prescription bottles and labeled – if anyone knows that – I would appreciate the info.

    Thanks again,

Hi lisamarie – probably somewhere in these forums this has been answered but since I just finished doing this myself 2 months ago – i’ll save you the effort of looking and send you a pm (private message) that will come to your email – just open it and see what I did – was quick, cheap and doable. CR as of Dec 2011 under the Hague Convention now come under the agreement as put out by the Dept of State

    Hague Convention Site
    Apostille Requirements

Since October 15, 1981, the United States has been part of the 1961 Hague Convention abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents (Only). The Convention provides for the simplified certification of public (including notarized) documents to be used in countries that have joined the convention. Documents destined for use in participating countries and their territories should be certified by one of the officials in the jurisdiction in which the document has been executed. Said official must have been designated as competent to issue certifications by “Apostille” (usually in the office of the State Secretary of State of his/her counterpart) as provided for by the 1961 Hague Convention.

With this certification by the Hague Convention Apostille, the document is entitled to recognition in the country of intended use, and no certification by the U.S. Department of State, Authentications Office or legalization by the embassy or consulate is required.

Documents requiring certifications with an apostille by the U.S. Department of State are those that have been signed by a federal official with the official Seal of that agency, American Consular Officer, Military Notary (10 USC 1044a) or Foreign Consul (Diplomat Officials must be registered with the Office of Protocol). Note: These documents must include the official’s title and his/her signature must be legible. Please also note that the U.S. Department of State will not issue an apostille for State-issued documents.

For more information on countries participating in the 1961 Hague Convention (abolishing the requirement of legalization for foreign public documents — Article 12) please visit http://www.hcch.net.

The key to the quick turn around by the Sec of States is to send your own self-addressed stamped envelope as they return them immediately. I used UPS 🙂 hope it helps – Pj

While i was trying to find custom restrictions for bringing in tolietries in my checked baggage for CR – i went to the IATAtravelcentre.com/CR-Costa-Rica-Customs… site and found this for currency – amazing –

    Currency rules
    Currency Import regulations:
Local currency (Costa Rican Colón-CRC): no restrictions.
Foreign currencies: no restrictions, but only US Dollars are accepted for exchange.

    Currency Export regulations:
Local currency (Costa Rican Colón-CRC) and foreign currencies: no restrictions.

Although I have lived in many parts of the world and have experienced various disasters as a Disaster Cadre Team Member prior to FEMA being established way back when – I can’t say that I like being around (or in) hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornados or storms at sea – but; my plan A was to move to Costa Rica, leaving here in PA in Nov and my plan B was to move to HI where I had previously lived. I was coming with my darling little Mimi girl (my beloved cat) but she passed last week – shook me up and I miss her terribly – but – Plan A is still on track and I hope all will be well with the world of CR when I arrive to live in my “spot of paradise” (long sentence I know – breatheeeeeeee now). p.s. Hope I find a permanent rentals that is built as well! Can’t live in fear all your life and can’t live under a rock – get out and feel something – anything!

Scott, I use a MAC with safari/firefox browsers. Part of the security options set up include validating “certificates by third parties’ sites” for instance. In 2006 when I joined WLCR.COM the certificate was valid but I haven’t had a need to change anything on my profile/pssd, etc. till now. When I clicked onto “your account” here on your site “to change your account details” safari pop up stated “can’t verify the identity of the website – WLCR.Com” Further it stated the the “certificate for this website is invalid” – “you might be connecting to a website that is pretending to be WLCR.Com” When I click on “show certificate” it shows that under PLESK – “the root certificate authority expired Sat 7/31/2010 at 11:27:44 AM ET” In bold red letters it states: “this root certificate is not trusted.”

SSL Error – Certificate Not Trusted

When you access a website through a secure connection, it is a common issue to get a warning that the certificate is not issued by a trusted authority.

The exact warning message you will get depending on your browser is:
Firefox 3 – “The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown. (Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer)”
Internet Explorer 7 – “The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a trusted certificate authority.”
Google Chrome – “The site’s security certificate is not trusted!”
Safari – “Authentication failed because the server certificate is not trusted.”
If you get one of the above warnings, this means that your browser does not trust the SSL certificate because it is not signed by a company that the browser recognizes as trusted.

The two most common reasons for this warning are:

    * The website is using a self-signed/free SSL certificate.
    * The website is using a private SSL certificate but it is missing a CA (Certificate Authority) certificate.

The solution in the first case is to purchase a private SSL certificate which is issued for the specific domain by a trusted authority.

The solution in the second case is to have the SSL certificate reinstalled with the correct CA bundle. The CA bundle is provided by the SSL vendor and should be included in the private SSL package.

The reason for my concern is just 3 days ago, I allowed a certificate from Microsoft that said it had expired and I was hacked into my email/data accounts – which is being worked on now. I change my emails, psswds, etc. and wanted to do the same here.

Sooooooooooooooooooo, I not a computer super savy person but try to pay attention to the security options I have to protect what I have – I was afraid to allow the expired certificate but can’t change my password without getting in unless u have another option on this site I couldn’t find.

    Thanks – Pj

Soooooooooooo-what DOES CAJA pay for and is it worth getting? I’ll be arriving soon (Nov) to CR to live myself. I have excellent Medicare and BC/BS Secondary insurance which I do understand isn’t worth a hoot and a hollar in CR – just curious tho. Has anyone had to spend any time (say a few days to a week) in the hospital in CR and what kind of costs were associated with that (not to be too personal).

    Hey Dave,

Yeah, I’m more than aware of that and I’m not shipping anything that is really high value at all but I would like to get my clothes and blankets, sheets, etc I’m sending as well as some kitchen stuff, too much to carry even in extra shipment and the airlines will only let you bring a total of 5 now period , even if you paid extra for them – bummer.

    Thanks for the info.

Thank you so much for your information but Charlie is shipping my items – only issue was – it won’t be insured and that was my concern. Was your shipment insured? I understand the liability if I am packing and the shipper has no way of knowing what really is in the boxes, but I was more concerned that my shipment would be sitting there saying “no ones looking, take me”.

I too took George’s longer tour back in 2005 and almost purchased a home in Puriscal which I loved but wasn’t quite able to retire just yet so I waited. George and his lovely wife were so helpful and friendly. I met Dave and his wife on that tour when they were just finishing their guesthouse in Grecia. There was no way I could have found out as much local information without George’s tour and I’ve since had 3 other families that took his tour over the years and are planning their retirements there. On November 16th, me and my little darling cat Mimi will be on our way to live in CR finally. We found a temporary rental in Atenas and will use this as our base until we find another more permanent rental after having a chance to look around. Many folks on this site have been so helpful to me especially Dave and Pete and Stef in getting all my ducks in a row. If I find a bigger rental later on. andynjen you can come stay with us to look around. Best of luck to you.
