In case someone replies , the scenario is this , a bit over a month ago I tried to pull $200 out of ATM HSBC San Pedro ,machine stated no funds in that currency available , no big deal happens all the time , later I realized I was debited for that $200 . Branch says I have to dispute with my USA bank , so I did , a few weeks later I was informed that HSBC indicated I did receive those funds . Back to branch ,informed supervisor that I did not get the funds which I why I am disputing . What did HSBC do to verify I recieved those funds , nothing , manager says if transaction number ocurred than that means I received the money . OMG , have to start allover . Not satisfied I asked for an accounting that day in question , they say funds balanced in the machine . If that is is the case , then whoever balances those machines pocketed the $200 . Now I am demanding the video and this is where I been getting the run around now for over 2 weeks . Manager never available , security dept hasnt reviewed, we’ll call you back , etc etc .

If I was a tourist not living here , I would be out the $200 with no way to get it back .
Charlie, I have to ask . . . Can I expect to buy a cell phone case from you the next time the line gets backed up at the tollgate on the autopista? If yes, how will I know you?
I dont think so. The people I run into that I am referring to sell things like silver , jewelry , designer clothes – accesories , cell phones ( not cases ) and much more . Some of these items sell for hefty amounts and peolple pay. I wanted to test out some items I can import and sell and see how that goes . What im interested in is how to report sales of this kind as a sole propietor would in the USA.
you can earn x million colones without having to report the income. depending on the exchange rate, i think it’s something like the equivalent of $5,000, but check with an accountant on that.
Is that $5.000 a month or quarterly . The accountant I visited wasnt exactly helpful with information, just asked what I was doing or thinking of doing and said dont worry about it .

Well I recieved my residency in december 2009 but was actually denied in writing by immigration a month before that . Prior to these events I spent over a year leaving every 90 days . There was a period even before that where I stayed for over 9 months without leaving and it was during my waiting period for residency with a number. In october 2009 I was notified in writing by immigration my application was denied due to the fact that I overstayed my allowable period during my application process. Not sure what my attorney did but a month later and telling my attorney to do his job , I was approved, maybe they they pick and choose who they are going to hassle , let in or out , who knows . I wouldnt take the chance as there are 2 sets of law books here in my opinion.
Charlie, I was replying to David’s post. Sorry, I should have made that clear by adressing him by name.

No problem, I guess we need to reply with a quote sometimes, hard to tell unless one is being addressed like you said .

No where in my statement did I generalize Ticos were uneducated. I only spoke of a specific situation if you were referring to what I had stated to someone.

The only point I should have made was that I do not like when a certain person in one culture tells another to get out of their country becuase of complaining in general. It happens in the USA towards foreigners there and it happens in any other country. Tell me many costa ricans dont say things about Nicaraguans here , I here it all the time . And I’m not generalizing all Ticos are this way or they are uneducated , just that it happens .

Yeah I hear what your all saying. I pretty much only associate with Costa Ricans not fellow Americans anyways . Not that I dont want too, but I guess I dont go out of my way to look for my countrymen I go with the flow around me . I watch and see how the CR’s act toward their own and they too will say “juep…” “carap….” toward their own, they complain as much. I keep quiet , cuase once an american says something , than it’s ” si no te gusta laragate de aqui” . Typical ignorant saying from anyone, anywhere . If you don t like it go back to your country. That is the stupidest saying only an ignorant sap would say anyways. It happens everywhere , we americans arent prone to that either , how many times do white folks say that back home to the hispanics , asians , or wherever one is from. I just spoke about this at a dinner party while watching the Uruguay game , and someone there told me If I dont like things here , get out . I flat out told her she was ignorant for saying that and she didnt get upset , I explained why and she was cool with it . My argument was that anyone should complain about whatever doesnt matter what country their from , I have hundred of complaints where I come from too no just here .

Immigration here has no way to enforce fining anyone . The government can’t even enforce traffic laws.

I’ve been flying back and forth for the last 6 years several times a year. I used to fly on 3 month tickets and always seemed to surpass the 90 days by a week to a month before flying back to the USA. Never was I questioned or fined coming back to CR. In fact 3 years ago I stayed in CR for almost a year without leaving once. No one questioned me on the return trip either. The first few years Ive been fying to CR almost no one asked for proof of return flights . However, these last 2-3 years , almost every airline that Ive flown asks to see a return flight or proof of residency. Ive gotten away with telling the agent I am aware of the consequences and their role is to inform not enforce, American let me go. Once I told them my wife and son are CR I am allowed to go as I please , Spirit let me go. Once I booked a future flight, not paid ,and just presented the itineray , Continental took it . And most recently just told the agent I was approved for residency which is why Im going , agent didnt even ask for proof of it , American let me go again. Other times I did have a return ticket. By the way , I was just approved for residency and Monday I get my cedula so I wasnt lying to the agent.

You hit the nail right on the head. My mother is Tica , we lived in Chicagoland my entire life and also never thought would make a move here, even after visiting family so many times throughout our lives. At age 35 when I started the application process I also found out too late for my mom to claim a child for citizenship, in fact, dont even think she knew it could be done from abroad. Yes you are also right , give your newly born kids here the chance to have dual citizenship and get things done right away.

Oh yeah good luck . My friend has 3 children here ages 6 to about 10 but he never applied for US passports or citizenship for them. Now he recently tried to apply for them to make a trip to the USA and they were all denied USA passports and citizenship because of the fact they have been living here all this time and not the USA. I know once born in CR you are a citizen forever, dont even need a passport to get in only your cedula will work. However, he had to apply for a VISA instead for them and not sure the outcoe yet. I know too when I applied for my son , they asked for my schooltranscripts which I thought was ridiculous , this means nothing except I went to school in the USA many many years earlier in my life, anyways they took my mortgage statements, tax returns , current IDs to prove I was living in the USA. I did this because I still want my son to have his choice when he is old enough.
