The answer is yes, but I also wondered since I recently had a one way ticket into CR myself. I just flew in this past weekend through TACA airlines, and no one ever questioned me about a return ticket. I did however have the $$ and itinerary for a flight back in case I had to purchase one at the counter.

Robberies happen anytime. I’ve walked around San Jose at night many times and nothing ever happned to me , and I have Gringo written allover my face . Our hired help, had his gym shoes stolen in the day time, right by La U Latina in San Pedro. My mother had something spilled on her in San Jose during the day as well, someone then yanked her chain, but it fell to the ground. My friend John was also jumped in San Pedro after pulling cash out of the ATM, he is 6’3″ , not easy to pull down , but the kids ran off , nothing serious happened to any of them, it was basically grab what you can in a second and run.

I think as long as you don’t look like easy bait , you should be fine . Some tips that may help you : Don’t look to the ground when you walk by people, look at them in the eyes, don’t look like your lost, act like you are aware of your surroundings, tell any strangers your expecting your Tico cousin or guide shortly, if they offer you assistance, etc. etc . Taxi drivers are really helpful, you get in any trouble , give one a $20 , they will have all their cabbie friends on your side in minutes , way faster than any police will ever show up. Plus Ticos no not to mess with cabbies unless you are prepared for a showdown.

You really need a copy of your passport, the driver’s license doesn’t tell anyone when you entered the country in case you get stopped by the Police for some reason .

You can leave the passport with the hotel safe, only need a photocopy of one to drive around in CR.

Sorry Stanley, I am using him for other services, although he specializes in residency , I did the leg work pretty much all on my own , so I don’t know what he would charge for new residency applicants, I can email him and see if members can get a break .

Either way it looks like you found what you needed , I used 3 previous attorneys in CR , they all had same thing in common , lack of English , couldn’t answer many of my questions , were always busy in “reunions”, and moved faster only with more $$$ in their face.

Fingerprinting in US not needed. I am going through one of my steps for residency, the background check. I went online with the Illionis State Police and ordered an application for name search check UCIA form. Cost $16. They mail the form to you . Fill it out and mail back to them. Once you get the report back and it is clear, you call them back and give them the report number and tell them you need it notarized for international purposes. In 2-3 days you get the notarized report, at no cost. All this from my desk. The only travelling I had to do was take the notarized form to the Secretary of State Office downtown Chicago, have them put the State Seal on it and then head over to the CR Consulate downtown Chicago so they can authenticate it. There may be an easier way to do this but it was cheap and only took an afternoon of my time to get it all done.

I have an attorney in CR , Marvin Wiernik, located in Escazu, he deals with immigration, and speaks English, deals with many North Americans. He responds by email and phone very quickly. You can email him at mwiernik@attorneyscw.com or his phone is 289-8576 office, 381-1595 cell, 231-5996 fax. He gave me permission to give out his info. Ref, by Charlie Quesada, I don’t get any $$ for ref. , so this isn’t a posting to promote a business, just giving info out to anyone that needs an English speaking immigration attorney.

I also have a one way ticket to Costa Rica, I bought one from CR to U.S. and back. Originally I came in to CR on a one way ticket and wasn’t asked for a return ticket, through TACA Airlines. But this time around , the Taca Airline agent told me if I return on my current ticket from US to CR , I will need to show a departure ticket. She told me that a reservation printout won’t work ( they can be cancelled ) and even if I have paperwork to show I am finishing up my residency paperwork on this final trip, that will not be acceptable either. I asked If I can purchase a ticket from CR to say, Nicaragua , she also said no, it has to be back to the US.

I can take the chance and come in without a return ticket to the US or buy one , say from San Jose to Fort Lauderdale , which costs $348 right now. I will probably buy one and do the correct thing, as long as my residency gets approved , I can use the new ticket for a getaway trip to the US and return to CR hopefully with proof of residency the next time around.

I have a Tico friend who is remodeling a couple of our apartments. He is amazing with his abilities in construction. He can build from the ground up. His next project is in Puerto Viejo for the next 6 months. If you like that area when you visit I can tell you how to locate him there. He does construction at Tico prices and he can even help you find the lot. I will try and find the website for a hotel which he built an addition for, can’t remember offhand. But you can see the style of work he does. Just let me know if your interested.

Check out Magnoliacloudforest.com, my cousin Mario started this with under $50,000 for land and building the cabin. The website is still up , but tours are no longer being offered , so this isn´t a promotion of someone else´s business. Let me know what you think ?

To get an idea of price , you can find at Hipermas , when in stock, U.S. made hose , Green Thumb No Kink Hose , it´s 25 ft. 5/8th for just under $13, all other hoses are junk.
