MemberLoose change plays loose with the facts, I have no desire to deconstuct many of its speculative points though. No doubt it is the gospel to some but i’m not buying it hook, line and sinker. There is also a very good film out there that makes a strong case that we never landed on the moon, I can’t remember the name but i’m sure you can find it on the web.

Member‘A farmer lived in the days when fighting was going on between small kingdoms in China. This farmer had a son. His son, with the aid of the horse, was tilling a small field. One day the horse ran away. The neighbors came and said, ‘It’s a very bad thing. You have such bad luck.’ The farmer said, ‘Maybe.’ So the next day the horse came back with half a dozen other wild horses. The neighbors came again and they said, ‘What tremendous luck.’ So he said, ‘Maybe.’ On the third day the son, while trying to ride one of the wild horses, fell and broke his leg. Again, the neighbors came and said what bad luck it was, and the farmer said, ‘Maybe.’ The next day the king’s people came to recruit strong healthy farmers into the army. When they found this farmer’s son with a broken leg they left him alone. So, again, the neighbors came and said it wasn’t such bad luck after all and that everything had turned out well. The farmer said, again, ‘Maybe.’

MemberDavid, I would assume one looking for an abortion would not go to a Catholic hospital but since it is a right for a woman to choose in this country perhaps they would be required to perform an abortion, i’ll look into that?. And convienence stores don’t all sell alcohol or are required too, would he open a liquor store and not sell alcohol? Silly…Would he become a waiter and refuse to bring a beer to the table(or pick a place that does not sell alcohol to work) Or would he ask the establishment to stop selling booze? But a taxi driver is meant to provide transport for the public…that is all they do. If they have a religious conflict with this they should get into another line of work. How far do we go with your line of thought? Lets Keep religous beliefs in the home or private clubs; we do not live in a Christian, Muslim or any other religous monarchy, although some folks act like we do! Business has an obligation to serve the public regardless of whether i’m a drinker, catholic, man, woman, handicapped etc…I’m a vegetarian and am part of a religion that suggests this as an appropriate diet. I eat in restaurants that serve meat, shop where meat is served have friends that eat the stuff I don’t ask for any special treatment. This is my belief and don’t suggest for a minute that it is the only way to live. If I was a cabby yes I would allow meat eaters in. Would you not feel slighted or annoyed or denied your rights if after getting off a red eye from San Jose I asked you if you ate meat then denied you a ride? My foray into european history was to point out we have evolved…. a bit and also to point out we were just as barbaric in our own time. Do the research on human rights in Iran, Somalia, Darfur, Saudi Arabia (where I was told if you see a man strike a woman it is advised not to say anything or be arrested) etc…and you will see an appaling human rights record. If we were really concerned about democracy and human rights we would not be building bridges with countries that have very little regard for fair and egual rights for all people, we would insist you may believe in any god you like, but people will be treated with dignity and respect or take your business elswhere. But I stopped believing we were beacon of human rights and democratic principle’s a long time ago Hence our government is interested in money and power, and when these are at stake we will do business with anyone or invade or otherwise intrude. Shall I make a list? And then when they no longer serve our needs we either leave them in ruins or invade: Panama, Haiti, Nicauragua, Irag just to name a few oh yeah and most of Africa. I’m not consumed by anger at this but except what I consider the facts, and do my best to live a peaceful life.

MemberDavid usually you are right on point, but I take exception to your examples. An abortion is generally planned in advance and the woman having one would make an appointment with an appropriate specialist. If a woman was brought into an emergency room and needed an abortion to save her life a doctor would be required to perform it regardless of religious belief. And the alcoholic friend of yours probably won’t be working in a bar or liquor store and would not take a job requiring him to handle alcohol. Where are all the moderates? It’s always a small amount of extremists that upset the apple cart. There was a time when “we” behaved in a very similar way, think the crusades, the colonisation of the Americas etc…We had our dark ages but then experienced the Renaissance and enlightenment periods. Most Islamic countries are 500 years behind. When we stop letting superstitions, national identities etc dictate how we view other people and have the realization we are all cut from the same fabric all came from and will return to the same place, perhaps then there will be some peace. Gandhi made the comment that as the Muslims and Hindu bodies were all burned after a battle there was no distinguishing one from the other. As good as America is, it is just as bad…..

MemberI have done the same route a few times and it is quite easy, I bought a very good CR map at a Barnes & Noble and traveled the whole country with it. To bad you couldn’t fly into Liberia, but from San Jose just head towards Nicoya when you turn off for Nosara buckle up because here is where it gets fun! Then your next choice will be whether to go back out to the Pan American highway or drive down the nicoya coast to the ferry to Punterenas. It may be to wet when you go and the rivers will be to deep to cross, ask the locals. This route is fun and beautiful but will require a medium size 4X4. Then Jaco to San Jose is less than 2 hours and quite scenic over the mountains a very easy ride on good roads, although the mountain crossing is a bit hairy…but fun!

MemberKoty,
Yes I did buy a 1.2 acre parcel from Wellington in the Columbus Heights development. I will not try and explain/defend/dispute the posts of Debbiesurfs, they are what they are. I wanted to be in the playa hermosa area only and prices have gone through the roof and my funds were very limited. I met with Facio (there attorneys) who are well respected, as well as spoke with everyone else involved and walked the property. I was also able to speak with the farmer who sold them the land(I know his cousin, a hotel owner in Hermosa). I also went to Wellingtons offices in San Jose and met/spoke with Paul, Stalpes and sales director Danny Yepes. Based on all this I took the plunge and reserved my lot. According to a detailed letter from Facio I will be closing in December. Up to this point they have done everything they are supposed to and heavy equipment is on the land and they have started the process of building out the infrastructure.
Remember they are only selling lots with roads, water and electric not building homes. If I had 100k to purchase with; yes I would have bought in one of the completed developments however I didn’t, and I wanted a bit of property anyone who knows the area will tell you if you can find a lot they run about $50-$75k for 500 to 700M2. So all this said i’m a big boy and I went in with eyes wide open prepared to take my losses if this was a “scam”, A year ago no one thought they would have gotten this far. As far as the moral aspect of doing business with Paul(the other guy I have never heard of?) yes I had some issues with this, but hey I have a lot of issues with U.S. government policy and Exxon but still pay taxes and buy gas. In the end I simply analyzed the project and made my decision based on that research. I know Scott will never agree with anything I have just written and neither will a lot of others and I don’t want to get into a Paragon thread situation here. I have made some good investments and bad in my life and I always took responsibility for my decisions.*Lotus
MemberI think dkt2 has it right, just don’t buy…why or how could you with so little information. Or take the time to investigate and make an intelligent decision based on doing your due diligence. I like the fact that Scott is leaving his “opinion” out unless he has some hard evidence against the advertiser/developer. If you want to play it safe buy what he is recommending as he has thoroughly researched these company’s.

MemberWhat I find annoying about these kind of web advertisements is the lack of any real information. Lots of general stuff etc…but no real information on the product.

MemberScott sounds like you have quite a colorful family situation down there. Maybe the makings of a costa rica reality show?

MemberVery cool, my girlfriend and I love all those home shows. We don’t watch a lot of TV but are stuck on HGTV shows like flip that house, designed to sell etc. Look forward to seeing your work, sounds like something you could continue to pursue in C.R.?

MemberDavid,
I guess what I mean is in regard to mailing to Costa Rica, If I do send you something via DHL, and just write gift or cd or something like that. Will it just go through to you or does customs look/hold everything? I read how difficult it is to receive a package there, but if it is sent through a private courier such as DHL won’t it just show up at your door in the 3 or 4 days DHL has promised to deliver it in?

MemberDavid,
I have received things here(US) sent via DHL from CR, are there any obstacles sending from the US to CR?
