I was curious if the money held in a CR Bank has any protection as it does in the USA with FDIC insurance?

    Jerry,

I’m very interested in the area of Turriabla. Could you suggest any good websites on the area? Accommodations, real estate, tourist info, anything that might help. I should be visiting the end of June and hope to relocate the first of the year.
    Thanks
    Ken

Is there any problem collecting Social Security later on in life if you move to CR in your 40’s?

You are correct in assuming that my tools are for my hobby, but I do have quite a bit. I was just curious. I probably don’t have receipts for most, so I guess I’ll have to take my chances and hope I find a good import negotiator.

I agree with downsizing what I have. Most of the things I want to bring are the things I do for hobbies now. I have a fairly well stocked wood shop and stained glass studio I would like to bring, as well as some misc. electronics, a good bed and various household items. Since I will need a container, I will squeeze in some things I think I might use (gardening tools, kayak, fishing gear, etc.)

I presently work at the Space Center, but have found I enjoy renovating homes in my spare time, so that is probably one thing I will atempt when I arrive. I’m a young 46, and like to work, so I’m sure I will have my hands in a lot of different things as time goes by. I’ll be going back to CR in June looking with the mindset of moving and not that of a tourist. I’ve been a couple times before and when I leave, I just think of going back. I enjoy the simple things, and am very patient, so I don’t think I will have too much trouble adapting.

One question you may be able to answer Scott. Would I be better off bring my tools and machines as a Homeowner or a Business?

I was mostly interested in speaking with a woodworker about availablity of good quality tools and machines. I don’t know whether I should bring all my heavy machines or sell them and buy them there?

I was curious if there were any self storage facilities there that you would consider safe?

Maybe you are right. I’m trying to think things through. It’s a prized wood here. I guess I would be better served to sell it here.
Thanks for the wake up call. There are so many things to think about before making the move, it’s hard to make all the right choices. That’s why this forum is so great!

    Thanks for the update Terri,
That’s very encouraging. I like martinair as well. It would be nice to have a list on here as to what people think should be brought along and what the regret having brought or left behind. I’m thinking of getting rid of almost everything, except all my tools and machines, but I wonder how easy it will be for me to bring down my two dogs and find a furnished apartment to rent while I find a place to buy. So many questions, so little time!

    Scott,
I’ve noticed concern that the rules for residency may be changing. I was hoping to become a resident by putting $60,000 in a CR Bank. I’m wondering what your feelings are about the possible changes.
Should those of us planning to relocate later this year(early next year) be concerned? I noticed someone posted elsewhere this way of becoming a resident was going away August 2006. Please tell me that’s not true!

I drove that road a year or so ago, dry season, and although it was kind of rough, I didn’t find it terribly bad. At least compared to many in the northern mountains. I must admit I was more concered about all the trucks. I was always curious what they where farming. I thought maybe palm hearts for food or something. I never thought of palm oil.
I must say, once you get to Dominical area, the roads looks all new. I was very surprised after such a long rough ride.

    Thanks Breezygirl,

I never thought of bring so much with the airline. I’m curious how that will work out. I am thinking of cargo containers by boat, I live near a major port in Florida. I think I will have to do that for some of the heavy stuff (my table saw alone is 450lbs.) . And that is just the tip of the iceberg. I have lots of high grade lumber, like mahogany and such. I’m going to make them into shipping crates for my equipment, so I won’t be charged a duty, then disassemble them to make furniture when I arrive. I also have lots of glass (stained glass supplies) which I will have to crate up. I’m just in the planning stages. I still have to finish my house to sell. My plan is to go the first of the year (2007). Which sounds like a long time, but I feel like I’m rushed for time already.
I’m sure glad there are groups like this out there. The help and advice is invaluable. I’ll be glad when I’m on the other side of the fence helping others with my experiences.
