dbartley, I understand fully. 20 years ago, I was having a dinner party, forgot something, and rushed to the supermarket to buy. On my way there, I was pulled over by an officer. He asked for my license and registration, which I could not produce; because I had left my bloody wallet at home, in the rush. He was very nice about it, and just gave me a warning. Ten years later, I had a FBI background check, prior to federal employment. The FBI agent that interviewed me stated I had a 100% clean record, he started laughing, and stated, except for one thing; you drove without a license and registration, ten years ago. I was cleared for my federal position, however, I was surprised that there was a record of the traffic warning, still floating in a data base somewhere. Expect the best, but be prepared for the worst.

The military taught me to always have a Plan B. My Plan B is, dividend paying stocks, treasury bonds, corporate bonds and international corporate bonds. If I get social security fine, if not, I can still maintain my standard of living.

I am a current employee, with the Department of Justice. If you also went through the routine 5 year FBI background checks, for federal employment; you should be OK. If possible, you could also check with someone to have them provide you with an NCIC background check; just to varify.

If having read the article in amcostarica.com, is correct. The $300.00 is for active corps., inactive corps only pay half. In my humble opinion, these luxury property tax increases, and corp. tax increase; are a small price to pay, for enjoying all the positive aspects of Costa Rica. I pay several thousands of dollars, in U.S. property tax, in retaining my U.S. home. Often, we forget, we are guests of the Costa Rican people, for better or worse.

Why Costa Rica……why not Nicaragua. I purchased a beachfront in Costa Rica, to get away from all the superficial people and aspects of American life!

I would agree with the two previous member’s posts. More often than not, I visit other Costa Rica sites and forums, for information and interaction with other expats. I am apolitician, and have no desire to participate or interact on politicial issues. Bottom line, Costa Rica information, advice, and productive interaction should be the mantra. I personally know of two friends/expats who fomerly were members of this site, and departed from their membership; with negative feelings. I have a trial members, so I will just wait until I expire.

Welcome to the new global reality. You are either a have or a havenot. People of means hire an army of lawyers and accountants, to avoid or write-off taxes. The poor and the middle class, are left to carry the tax inequity. This may not be a surprise to some, some American companies; also maintain two sets of books! How do you avoid unjust taxes, avoid unjust IRS off-shore account snooping, avoid CR bank and CR investment firms from bending-over to the IRS…….buy diamonds, very fluid and more valuable than paper currency! Mix with ice cubes in the freezer, have appraised and sell when needed!

I am not an attorney and do not proport to offer legal advice, however, I am a paralegal with 20 years of experience with complex litigation. There are several unmentioned factors involved with your partnership, which you have not detailed in your post. With or without a corporate partnership, it is shocking that you have not already consulted with an attorney, as opposed, to requesting information on a forum post. Don’t walk, run to an attorney!

    bogino,
I respect your opinion, however, I must take issue with your term “escape.” With politicians, Wall Street and corporations, affecting and influencing voting; does anyone still believe their vote counts! Having served in the military for 21 years, and having traveled around the world; I have actually found that some foreign countries offer more liberties and a better quality of life, than the U.S. I do not consider my relocation to Costa Rica, as an escape; rather a method of survival. Fighting the government and corporations equates to the British battle tactics of the 17th century, put on a red coat, stand in straight columns, take the first volley of enemy fire, and wait for the order to return fire. As a professional fighter, I wish you the best of luck!

in reply to: Property Tax Declaration 2011 #161548

My understanding is, this is a new property tax re-assessment, of all properties. Everyone must submit a new property tax declaration, that must be submitted by every home owner/corporation, to their Municapal office.
