2BNCR, it sounds to me that you are ‘in love’ with the idea of being a ‘Tico’. Have you actually lived in Costa Rica? I read on a previous posting of your about being delinquent on your property tax, so assume you have been here and have purchased land. So many posters on many different forums pertaining to Costa Rica, have visited but for a short time and feel they ‘know’ what it is like to really live here.
    But they don’t!
And you will never be a ‘Tico’….although you can still be buried here.

As long as they have a clean record! And they still have to show all the necessary paperwork.

You cannot just apply for ‘citizenship’. You must go through the hoops by first getting some kind of resident status. Three years later, you can apply for resident status which then allows you to legally work.
Then after about 5 years, you may apply for citizenship, which in turns allows you to vote.
I think you should the rules pertaining to living and working

How can one present proof to you that people have been refused re-entry?
Many times people are refused re-entry unless the purchase a return ticket, if their travel has originated in Costa Rica, but one can’t ‘show you’ that this is the case, either.
You know doubt would not accept the ‘he says, she says’ scenario.
Those of us who have lived here for many years know of people who have never returned.

We spoke with employees at a small hardware store and they told us the cost of blocks, rebar and cement have come down, and in January expect a sharp decrease.

We tried to get residency a few years ago, under Investor status, and unless you are investing millions it is hard to get it. You may have to complete the project, then apply. You must show how many locals you will employ as, you know that you are not legally permitted to ‘perform the physical tasks’. There are many people here who are trained in spa treatments, so you wouldn’t be able to say that there is no competent help, available. You need to provide a business plan and feasibility study etc.. But, remember this is after you have completed the project. I don’t think your personal residence, applies.
You spouse and family would have to apply personally, by depositing the $60,000 at the going rate….
Earlier, some folk have purchased B&B’s that allowed them to ‘work’ in their projects, but this is getting much harder to obtain. And how this would fit into the possible new requirements, I have no idea.

From Jaco to La Fortuna should be no problem, but from Jaco to Quepos could change in the ‘blink of an eye’.
Be aware, you would be better to consider renting a 4×4.
I would suggest, that even if you have driven the route before, is not drive at night, period! Too many families walk at the side of the road, in the dark with no flashlights or wearing dark clothing and cyclists seldom have lights reflectors either.

There is also a lack of construction workers here, or at least there was due to the building boom in Guanacaste.

An an couple of Brits who left the country many years to go to Canada and stayed there for nearly 30 years, we then moved here nearly 9 years ago.
On most of the forums about Costa Rica and those who actually live here will usually advise…rent first!! Get to know an area then decide where you think your ‘niche’ will be.
This is why a vacation or two before hand is very important. Travel around the country and you will save money in the long run.

I don’t think you will find what you are looking for, at the price you are prepared to pay.
Power, you say, is not required, but solar won’t provide for everything you may need. Even ‘budget travelers’ nowadays seem to require phone/internet access.
Some friends of ours tried this route, and are experiencing many problems.
Solar, is great, if you are using it with a back-up system.

I would advise that it will be about 7pm that you get to your hotel in Tamarindo, not 6pm.

It is very much the ‘rainy season’ here right now, so this could curtail some of your activities.
I would also add that most businesses here are like anywhere else, and that is that money is the bottom line.
Check the internet for birding info,as to where to go, if you are into that type of tourism. Some good national parks with good accommodation/tours offered or wander around by yourself.
Check in the ‘Tico Times’ which you can pick up at the airport as to what is on that week.
