Guess I am in the wrong house 🙁 Decided on this one in 7 hours after looking at 6 hours. Somehow, I just feel good about it.

Finally, a scientific study! Unfortunately, it was published in a journal backed by Green Publishing which has a serious bias against GMOs. I had the article reviewed by a PhD physiologist with 27 years in research. He concluded that the study: used too small a sample, does not include multiple species, has no claim of P-values (statistical significance), and showed results that are not dose-dependent. In addition, a valid study can be replicated and must be replicated by other labs to be trustworthy. Please don’t refer me to any more videos that are designed to provoke an emotional response, not a logical one. Thanks.

“Natural selection” is, at its base, a change due to environmental pressures. It is not a choice.

“Genetic engineering” involves a choice. We start with the wolf and chose characteristics that yield a Golden Retriever.

We start with a 10cm ear of corn and end up with a 50cm ear that is sweeter, more tender, and bi-colored.

We take a gene from one species, insert it into another species and get a new source of insulin or vitamin A enrichment.

Are people still going to starve? Probably. Die of disease? Probably. But research will always pay a dividend.

Now we join with our expat friends worldwide. The larger the group, the better the result.

So companies want to engineer plants that have a greater yield and make their own pesticides so that we can reduce the spraying of harmful chemicals on our plants (and into the air) and feed more people. How is that a problem?

Can you imagine her in the courtroom? “I OBJECT! Overrule me and the forces of darkness will destroy you!”

For thousands of years, we have been genetically engineering our food. We learned to cross-pollinate crops for a larger seed heads, greater sugar content, more protein. We bred a prize bull to certain cows for higher milk production or more meat. We genetically engineered for food and for vanity (how else did the wolf become the Chihuahua?).

We have genetically engineered for thousands of years, we just didn’t know how to do it quickly. Now we do. The danger lies in relying on a single type of seed to the exclusion of others. As for the engineering? I really prefer a Golden Retriever…..

Just never, ever, exchange dollars for colones at the CR airports. They give about 40 fewer colones per dollar. A real gyp.

Dave always pretty much nails it. I would like to add the following. When we packed up for shipping, we had to list – on a separate sheet – each item that had an electric cord. Everything, including alarm clocks and hairdryers. On the list: model number, serial number, name of item, name of manufacturer and date purchased. The last was very important as anything purchased within 6 months of shipping is considered new for duty purposes. We listed everything as purchased at least a year before shipping, if you get my drift.

I wonder…….if you buy colones in the States, can you bring in more than $10,000 worth?

Best advice? Keep reading the posts here! Also, amcostarica.com, ticotimes.com, and duralavida.com. The last one is for the Lake Arenal region.

Try renting by the month in different locations. Sample the beach (hot/humid), the central valley (crowded and pollution concerns), the Arenal area (cooler/quiet/not a lot of shopping), and San Isidro General in the SE (nice climate/good shopping). You will find the perfect place for y o u.
