  • in reply to: Where to buy great egg laying chickens #172131

I guess we figured out the age old question, and so, the egg comes before the chicken.
I asked the woman that we buy our organic eggs from, and she is bringing me chickens today from the place she gets the eggs.
Sometimes the answer is right in front of you……happy solstice to you all…
Any suggestions on end of the world/solstice names for the girls?

I was told that the main reason that we humans should never plan to use anti venom at home is because a large number of people react to the anti venom by going into anaphylactic shock.
Sounds like some of you have been successful using it on your dogs……do you know what the dangers are to using it ourselves on our dogs? Is it safe, or just better then nothing if the vet is not available????

in reply to: Can I buy “grass cloth” wallpaper here? #159993

Drywall, primed with a specific primer, by me, in the library with a wrench along with Colonel Mustard

You’d think not, but at our spa in key west I put grasscloth up on the walls of our shower room, there is no ventilation in there, very steamy, and it has been good for almost 10 years, so I think it will be ok

“the point is identifying a natural environment where the initial resistance are down and making the exchange as normal as possible.

in the end to each is own.”

OK, not sure what I’m being drawn into here, but I’m game.
So, I take it we’ve moved from “shopping” references to hunting references, right?
I have to say that I am not the best “dater” on the planet, but when my plan includes phrases such as where I need to establish an environment where their resistance is down, then well good sir, we are very out of my ballpark….uh shopping mall…..uh shooting range……what were we doing again? Oh yea, finding our soul partners.

OK, I usually sustain form making snarky comments (untrue) but I have to be the first to say that it is very amusing (although not really) to see that so far the consensus for finding these prized woman to marry is to go trolling for them at places that sell stuff. I can’t argue as to whether or not it works, but man, this subject is very “commodious” (word made up just now with a root in the word “commodity”)I mean, go for it guys, but I just had to say…….

And some of the mangoes! Geeze, you get home with what you thought was the perfect mango; reddish orange, just the right amount of softness, and oooh tha heavenly heady mango scent….only to find out it’s all stringy! And don’t get me started on waterfalls! OK, so you hike through the jungle for ever, finally you can hear the roaring sound of water crashing in the jungle, and it’s HOT and Humid and your ready to peel of what cloths you still have on only to find that there’s no pool at the bottom! Just a beautiful cascade of water crashing onto rocks. This place drives me crazy!
Ok,now the Rainbows. THE friggin RAINBOWS!!!!……..

Oh, and by the way, we are fenced in. I had mentioned that it is a seven strand barbed wire fence, and not a chain link, so if a dog wanted to get out, they could somewhere. We have a large property bordered by the National Park on one side, and a 50 hectare farm on the other, and we are two kilometers from the main road, so really it’s like placing a dog on a farm. I guess she still wanted to take a look, but again, too busy.
I’m sure it would have worked for her, and I’m also sure it will still work out when it does, always has….

I get some of those announcements too, but more could be better. Look me up on Facebook under Mark Goldstein, I guess it will be good to look for me in Manuel Antonio, or at least Costa Rica, Thanks Patricia.

in reply to: Looking for a labrador retriever #163002

    Hi Patricia,
Thanks for your input and help. I wanted to update you with the situation.
At this point we are still searching.
Your friend Helene seems to be a wonderful person doing great work rescuing and providing for her dogs, but it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to work something out with her.
Long story short, she offered to come to my home to check out, then needed to cancel, and now seems to think it better that I look elsewhere, since she is too busy to make the trip to Manuel Antonio.
She was very very nice, and wished me the best, but says that she is too busy to make the trip, and it seems like she requires a visit……..I get it, but I’m a bit surprised.
In any case, we are picky too! We really have our hearts set on another labrador. In the States there are plenty of Lab rescue organizations, but there doesn’t seem to be any here.
We will not consider shipping one down, that would be crazy.
The other sweet dog that you saw I was trying to adopt on line, well, she lost that one. It escaped, and she can’t find it.
So, got anything? Like I said, we’re pretty picky too about who we end up with. we are not “gatherers” when it comes to animals, and so we want to commit to just the right dog.
I keep fighting off puppy opportunities, but one of these days we might just cave in……any leads out there will be great!

in reply to: Residency requirements #167579

Please do a search on the site here, it has been addressed pretty thoroughly

in reply to: Residency requirements #167577

While I was in “tramite” for my residency, which is where you are now if you have the official stamped paperwork showing that you have filed for your residency, I would simply carry a copy of that with me along with a copy of my passport. I was stopped a few times on the road at check points, and these sufficed every time even though I had been in the country over 90 days. However, I did almost get in trouble because I did not have a Costa Rican drivers license. When that happened, I talked my way out of it, and then proceeded to get the license.
I was also able to use the stamped paperwork with the airlines in the States, so that I could fly back to CR and not have a return ticket to the US, as they can require.
So in my opinion and experience, one you have your stamped paperwork, you should be good to stay.
This all took place last year, so it is pretty current information.

I buy raw milk here in Quepos from a truck that comes around once a week, Quepos is more on the touristy side as far as towns go here, so if I can get it here, I can only imagine that it is even easier in more rural areas. I pay c2500 for a gallon, so that is about $5.00 give or take. It comes in a used container, bleach bottle, salad oil bottle…you never know, but so far, it has been clean, and safe and SO much better then the milk in the carton with the years of shelf life, which really the only other option here as far as I have seen.
I read recently that one of the reasons that they homogenize milk is because the cows can be milked almost non stop, so there is all sorts of things like pus (sorry) that ends up in the milk, and no the process of homogenizing does not remove the pus (again, sorry) but just makes it stay in the mix better, look it up.
Of course there is some danger associated with drinking raw milk, but really only if it is not handles correctly. It is VERY easy to pasteurize it at home by simply heating it up to 160 F., and then letting it cool down. Easy stuff.

in reply to: Some sort of virus with fever? #165458

I was going to chime in with Dengue too.
Not a lot you can do about it, they say, but here is what we did last year, and it may have really helped.
Papaya Leaf juice. Yup. If you want to know what green tastes like, this is the stuff. You have to make it yourself, can’t buy it, but down here it is very easy to do if you have a vegetable juicer.
My partner Jon had it last year, and his platelet numbers kept falling and falling. I don’t remember the threshold numbers right now, but he was right on it, and was just about to be hospitalized so that they could observe him.
In any case, I did find some info on using Papaya Leaf Juice, and made him drink the prescribed amount for a couple of days, and he went from wanting to die to healthy pretty darn quick.
    Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not.
Honestly, I don’t remember where exactly I sourced the information, but here is a link I found after a very quick search.

    http://maxloh-something2share.blogspot.com/2009/02/dengue-fever-papaya-leaf-juice.html

I am definitely NOT the person who goes online and believes what I want to for the sake of it, just the opposite. But, we really needed to fix this, dengue can be miserable.
They say the cure for most things grows right next to the thing that causes the problem.
BTW, I found that I used the newest freshest leaves, and not the older ones. Again, tastes REALLY GREEN, puts a shot of wheatgrass to shame.
    Good luck.
    Mark
