    Bye bye….

in reply to: an open letter to Scott Oliver #158777

I have to say that I used to log on everyday to read the new posts, catch up on the old ones and post a few myself. I would love to feel that way again, but I will throw my hat into the ring as well to say that the political posts and what some one called ” conspiracy theories” have driven me away for the most part. I used to tell anyone that would benefit from WLC to join up, but sadly it has been a long time since I have felt comfortable doing so.
I for one will be very happy to throw in my two centavos in to any discussions about my couple of years living here, when and if we can all get back to keeping this about helpful information on living and moving here. Lets all hope that that happens.

That is a great link. I’m confused though about how to purchase from them. I live here in Manuel Antonio, and it looks like of you order with a CC which has a billing address in the States, then the delivery has to go there. Do you know how we can purchase any of these books while living here in CR? Is there somewhere that I can pick them up in person? Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the responses so far. I am still hoping to find the names of some professional dog trainers so that I can take a rescued dog and train him/her to not take food from strangers, to protect us, and to know who is good or bad. Anyone? Thanks

in reply to: Guard Dogs In Costa Rica #200982

No, those prices are not correct. I did get prices form them, and they quoted between $4000 and $10,000, depending on the level of training.

Thanks for the response, I do agree with you that the right dogs treated the right way will be great protection dogs. However, my fear is that if I am depending on a dog, lets say I rescue a large breed dog and “expect” it to guard us, and he does, my fear is that the ladrones might go ahead and use poison to deal with him, and that is where the training comes in. Is there someone out there who can help me to train a dog to be a good guard dog, but also avoid things like poisoning?
I do have a dog, and he knows the difference between the good and bad people and will protect me by instinct, but I am looking to up the game and get something a bit more serious going. Are there good trainers out there???

There is also a fourth way for your pet to travel, and that is as a service animal. The Americans with Disabilities Act allows any of us to bring our service animal on board with us at no charge. Your service animal may be assisting you either physically, as in a guide dog for the blind, or they can be assisting you for emotional reasons. In the second case you need or have a letter signed by a health care professional to explain your need, such as anxieties over a fear of flying, and that your animal being with you will allow you to fly more calmly. Again, they must give you ample space for you and your pet, and there is no charge.
There is a misunderstanding by some that your animal must be “licensed” as a service animal, and that is completely untrue. What I am bringing up are facts, and not opinions. The laws are very clearly published. I have experienced doing this, and there were zero problems, as the airline professionals are very aware of this law, and accommodate accordingly.
Please look into this if it may apply to you.

If you would like to look up images of the toad that you need to worry about, look up “Bufo marinus”.
“Bufo” alone is the genus, and will attach itself to many species of toads.

I have a simple solution to get Ticos, and others here, to stop throwing their trash around.
Let’s get an ad campaign that says:
Each piece of trash you throw in the street, jungle etc. will take a day from your mothers life.
If you get enough people to just think it might be true, then we may have something that is simple and could make a dent in all of this.
    Wastewater…???? I’m still thinking here….

All pet owners! You need to know this, for the sake of your pet, and your wallet. The Americans with Disablities Act allows you to take a sevice animal almost anywhere that humans are allowed, anywhere, including airplanes.
They can not limit you, your service animal, or the number of them allowed on the plane. This is a very strong and clear law. Service animals are not only defined as helping “obvious” things such as blindness. A service animal does not need to be a guide dog. they can be for medical or emotional needs. There are many medical needs that service animals provide such as seizure warnings, diabetic shock, etc. If you claim your service animal for ANYTHING medical, then by law it is a privacy issue, and you must be given access and no one is allowed to ask you to divulge your personal medical condition. Of course you can, but you do not have to. You only need to state that the animal is serving your medical need. If you claim emotional need, then the airline will usually require that you do produce an officail letter from a licensed health care provider.
This is very well documented in American law, and should be used by anyone who can apply it to their situation.
First, your animal will not have to suffer the stress, and possibly worse, situation of flying in the luggage hold, and the beauty of this law too, is that the airline is not allowed to charge you anything to bring them on board, nothing.
When we moved down, we brought our Labrador, he was welcomed with scrathches, and offers of water and treats, we got great seating to give him enough room to lay at our feet. When we arrived in Saj Jose, we breezed through customs by handing a gentleman our paperwork, that being the FDA paparwork that stated his clear bill of health, shots etc, as stated earlier, and that was that.
I personally know several people who have done this many times with their dogs, and have never had a problem.
If you have any questions, please ask.
