Actually, Scott, there will be three of us (I’m doing most of the planning). I’d thought to carry the valuables into the hotel at night; of course, someone would be with them in the vehicle during the day. However, from your reply, it sounds as though we very well might not make it from the vehicle into the hotel and that the goods that were left in the vehicle might not make it through the night. ๐Ÿ™

This brings up another question. How safe is a home in an ungated community in the mountains outside of San Jose?

    Why a property owning Tico?

Thank you, Scott. By the way, I’m in the process of getting your book. I expect it will answer any number of questions I’ll have before getting down there and looking around in person.

I was speaking with an agent today and got what sounded rather strange. His company charges $50/day, refundable if property is bought, to take a client around to properties. He collaborates with a number of agents and said that most don’t charge, but show and sell only their own. Thoughts?

We’re planning to visit, Scott. It was a matter of where to go to visit. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you for all of your help!

Yes, we’re seriously thinking of doing this, Scott. Our question, though, of course, is *where* to rent. I had a question on another topic that you were kind enough to answer — “where to settle”; I’m not sure if San Jose is the place we’re looking for. So — I’m asking about various options. I know I can see mountains in this area; I don’t know if the temperatures are about 70 degrees year round and if I won’t be in a large city. Could you liken it to any city in the U.S. as far as population density is concerned? I suppose it isn’t like New York or Washington, D.C.; I really don’t want something like that. Private house with no homeowners’ association and plenty of room between my neighbor and me; that’s my idea of living.

    Now you tell me! :)))

Sad — I used to substitute teach high school Spanish — 40 years ago. Now, I’m going to be signing up for a Spanish 1 class. :((((( If you don’t use it, you lose it. The same happened with my French.

How about theaters, restaurants, etc.? Are they at all accessible if we can get her close enough to them? Or is everything up and down stairs?

One newspaper lists everything in the country! This certainly makes it easy. This sounds like when I was living in Israel in 1965 — the phone book for the whole country, half in English and half in Hebrew (duplicated back to back) was about 6″x 8″ and about a half inch thick. ๐Ÿ™‚

This is terrific news, Scott! Thank you as always. ๐Ÿ™‚

Is there anyplace I can find listings of non-tourist things to do in the various areas? For instance, a listing of clubs, group activities, etc.?

    Thank you very much, Andres!

I want to be sure I understand what you’ve said:

    1. I can get the basic coverage for everything including the pre-existing problem.
    2. I *probably* won’t get the upgraded national health policy at all — even for everything but the pre-existing illness; however, it depends upon the condition.
    3. Private companies will cover me, but exclude the pre-existing condition either for a specified period of time or permanently; but I can get discounts for the treatment of the condition.

Is this correct? If so, if I were to go with #3, would I still be able to be covered by the Social Security plan for the pre-existing condition while covered for everything else privately?

I hate gated communities! And you’re closer than you think; I live in Orlando. :))

I’ve received a couple of answers so far and expect there might be others. Both people wanted to live outside of gates and homeowners associations; both wanted to live with the Ticos. I’m all in favor of exactly this. If someone tries to show me a home with a homeowners’ association, I run the other way. When I lived in Israel, I made sure most of my time was spent with the Israelis and not with the Americans who were in my group (I went to work there for a year when I was in college).
