    Oh, dear…

I was planning on visiting a few times to be pretty sure of the area in which I wanted to live, going down and staying in a hotel for a short while until I could rent an apartment, and then living in it for a few months before buying. It looks as though I’m going to have to figure something else out! Thank you, Maravilla.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I could do without making too drastic a change in plans? I really want to go down there with the ability to enroll in caja medical and can’t do that without residency fully in the works.

I’m trying to figure something out, Jasmine. I was under a completely different impression and so just called social security. I’m 60 years old and collecting survivor benefits. When I start collecting on my own record (higher benefits than on his), I’ll completely lose survivor benefits. This is what has been told to me now three times (I’ll collect only on the higher record). I don’t understand how your friend is collecting both. Can you please explain this? Thank you!

    Thank you as always, David!

Someone (it may have been you, David) said elsewhere that all bills would be paid at the bank; you’ve mentioned something similar here. Why are bills paid at the bank?

From the given link: “Within the application process you will be required to provide the Department of Immigration with the following information:

…17. Physical Address in Costa Rica, 18. Telephone number in Costa Rica.”

I don’t understand how a person can file for residency until he/she already resides in the country and has a phone number unless there are people who will let theirs be used. Can anyone explain this?

    Thank you everyone who’s answering.

I’m looking to live in the mountains around San Jose — probably somewhere in the area of Heredia. My first trip will probably be this August; hopefully, we’ll be moving by Dec. of 2007.

I didn’t think of doing an archive search; thank you. ๐Ÿ™‚ I keep reading everything, but I’m sure there’s plenty of back info. I’m also going to have to find how to receive this weekly email I seem to have missed. ๐Ÿ™‚

Where did you find a CR company, David? Was your container insured the same as it would be (if purchased) with a U.S. company? From what I was told here, I give them a value; they insure it for loss or damage.

I asked a question about this earlier concerning my ivory (I called it antiques) and so forth and got a similar reply. I keep reading about all of the theft by people who are earning low incomes compared to those in the States and figured I was going to have to find some way to sell this stuff. I also keep looking at real estate ads and see so very many houses for well over $400,000 and I don’t want to spend more than about $150,000 if that much. These two seem imcompatible; people who live in half-million to million dollar homes probably have expensive items there and probably wear expensive jewelry. Can someone please make these two situations mutually complementary for me?

What is ARCR, David? Thank you! I’m sure I read it someplace, but I can’t find it.

    Anyone,

    1. How long does it take from the time a person applies for residency to the time that a person can buy health insurance through CAJA?

    2. Can a person apply for residency during a visit or must the person have a domicile to do this?

    Thank you in advance.

This sounds much better, although certainly not perfect, Dicbobcr! While I hate debit cards, at least it’s a way to buy whatever I need without having to pay the exchange rate with a U.S. card.

And, no — one way or another, no matter what the problems that need to be overcome, I’m moving. It would just be nice to have as few problems as possible. ๐Ÿ™‚

Okay — so, for the $64,000 question. How do people function without bank accounts? Can you cash checks drawn on American banks? Can you get a credit card issued in Costa Rica?

in reply to: Driving to Costa Rica and customs #175513

Thank you, David! I’m beginning to think that having beautiful (expensive) things is definitely not the way to go. ๐Ÿ™ I hate hassles! The idea of hassling insurance companies doesn’t thrill me.

You said you’d just posted an extensive answer in this forum; this is the only post I see. Can you direct me, please?

What, exactly, is this high-tech film? In what type of store is it bought?

Thank you, Dick. I was wondering about the property owning part — why would it be better if the Tico owned property?

Whew! Good info, Scott! Thank you very much. ๐Ÿ™‚
