There is ‘no way' you can see the country as a resident … unless you are one, and have stood in line for an accumulation of hours, then find you have to return the next day.

You post “…I have listed the pluses and minuses over and over and the pluses far outweigh the negatives”.

Only you, know what you expect/believe to be true, so to make a decision based on the plus and negatives, that someone else has determined makes no sense.

While somethings have indeed improved over the past years, the bureaucracy has increased as has the cost of living.

Victoria, our friends up near you was robbed on Christmas day a couple of years ago… as were their neighbors, around the same time. So, crime is there, so don’t let your guard down.

Spoke with a very reliable source yesterday, who explained that Monsanto has leased a large area in which they are experimenting with GMO cotton. They have planted both this and ‘regular’ cotton and the company who planted and give the TLC must account for every seed planted.
Of course, this is with the approval of the government. of Costa Rica.
camby, the are lot’s of obese people here…

Do you think they would tell you that these are grown from seeds gotten illegally? It is very easy to order seeds online, from many companies or just bring some back with you.
The farmer told our friend who leased him the property, that he paid $150 per kilo. And he Knew he could sell his very tasty corn. He did say, that the specific corn seeds required much more TLC immediately after planting, and there was much more labor involved. It was only after I said, I would keep some kernels, that I was told that they probably wouldn’t germinate…

The farmer could have purchased it elsewhere….

We unwittingly ate the best tasting corn last year that we had ever had in CR, and after finding out how much per kilo the seed cost, we are convinced it was GMO.
A ‘former’ American friend …who is addicted to RoundUp … contacted Monsanto directly wanting to purchase GMO corn seeds and was told that they were not permitted to sell it.
The farmer who grew the ‘great’ corn had a large farm in Cartago but had leased property in Guanacaste to grow it, where conditions are better.

I remember a post, where someone, after spending a month at Los Suenos, wrote they were moving to Costa Rica … and I responded by saying ’that ain’t the real Costa Rica' so don’t base a decision to move on that experience, no matter how wonderful it was. There is no way, it can be duplicated anywhere else in Costa Rica.
However, there are many other great places, and it’s ’different strokes for different folks' as the saying goes.

If one is speaking to folk near you, this probably means that they have visited but not necessarily lived here. While at least they may familiar with tourist places here, it at least is better info than none at all, although it will be like comparing apples to oranges. Many ‘Snowbirds’ come here every year but are glad to return ‘home’.
When the ‘honeymoon period’ is over and the ‘rose tinted glasses’ are off, and you are trying to deal with the bureaucracy that at ‘home’ would be easy, you will find that patience must be learned.
After living here for 12 years, like Loraine, I have known at least 6 couples that have returned, either together or alone, because the wife missed the grandchildren or their old routine, so this is not an uncommon predicament. I also know others who are still wrestling with this issue or are still trying to sell the homes.
A test drive should be much longer than a weeks vacation.
An important fact to know that is is much easier to buy property, than it is to sell it.

costaricabill isn’t that what I said 🙄
Definitely, that’s what I meant!!! But they will see some nice ‘boats’ won’t they?
Camby seems to be trying to persuade his wife to move here, and to me this is asking for big trouble …

I thought you had said you were coming on your own.
While I understand what you are doing now, you could give her the totally wrong idea of what living here, is all about.
To see boats, you should head to Los Suenos marina where luxury is the key to the good life, or so I am told. 😛 Again, this isn’t the real Costa Rica.
When are you intending to travel?

While I realize that you want to take boat tours because of your interest in building boats, this will not give you the insight of living in Costa Rica.
There are no tours offered to tourists that explain unexplainable procedures and how to deal with bureaucracy that one has to get used to … 🙄

We have five dogs, including an English mastiff. Once dark, they don’t go outside of the property and we all usually go to bed, at 8PM, inside.
We have moved approx. 15Klm. from the farm, but are still in a rural neighborhood, with only the occasional person/vehicle passing our way. More likely, a herd of cows…
BTW back to the OP. I remember reading that the local municipality will get involved in a noise dispute, although this would be between a loud Karaoke bar or an establishment that played loud music after hours, but not wouldn’t get involved with ‘livestock issues’ or barking dogs.

There was five dogs sleeping in the adjoining garage, but the door was left open for them. They barked at midnight during a full moon, I walked outside to see if everything was OK.
Stupid, in hind site.
I thought our goats had got into the field behind us, so I reassured them, that everything was fine and we all returned. The next morning, the 3 bodies were outside the door. Most of my husbands tools were taken, and they had also broke into the truck that was parked outside. They had gone round back to the laundry area and took items from there too,
After looking around, we could tell they had had been hiding, where I had checked ….
A friend ‘lost’ two dogs last week in a different area. Unfortunately, this is a common practice here.
