I have never before ever had any bad thoughts about a dog but as our lives have now been seriously affected by some Tico dogs across the valley from us I am being forced to really and truly consider “getting rid” of the barkers.
They bark non stop for an average of 7 to 8 hours every night. We can no longer have any windows or doors open and it still sounds as though they are on our front lawn.
No I do not want to wear ear plugs for security reasons.
The owner of the farm has refused to do anything about the renters ( farm workers) and we have now asked the Ticos, once verbally and once in writing, to please curtail their dogs noise.
No joy. So after 3 years of absolute peace we are now desperate for sleep. Will the Police help??? and don’t mention the Health Department and noise pollution regulations as am more than positive their level of noise pollution and ours would never meet.
Any really good suggestions, anyone know of a dog hunter out there. Yes its that bad.

September 12, 2012 at 8:44 pm #174215costaricafincaParticipantWe keep our five dogs inside at night, because during a robbery three were poisoned and died.
September 12, 2012 at 9:17 pm #174216spriteMemberPlease elaborate…Was the robbery restricted to outside the house?
I think dogs would be a necessary accessory to any home. They may not stop a robbery, but they can warn you of intruders if you are present.
Besides the obvious emotional connection between dogs and people, dogs are effective early warning systems. But if the dog is outside, he is barking all day long and no longer serves as anything but a noise nuisance. Chaining a dog outside is barbaric.
September 12, 2012 at 9:41 pm #174217costaricafincaParticipantThere was five dogs sleeping in the adjoining garage, but the door was left open for them. They barked at midnight during a full moon, I walked outside to see if everything was OK.
Stupid, in hind site.
I thought our goats had got into the field behind us, so I reassured them, that everything was fine and we all returned. The next morning, the 3 bodies were outside the door. Most of my husbands tools were taken, and they had also broke into the truck that was parked outside. They had gone round back to the laundry area and took items from there too,
After looking around, we could tell they had had been hiding, where I had checked ….
A friend ‘lost’ two dogs last week in a different area. Unfortunately, this is a common practice here.September 13, 2012 at 12:47 am #174218spriteMemberSo sorry about your loss. I know that thieves poisoning dogs happens often enough. It is totally incomprehensible to me how anyone could kill three dogs for some tools and back yard bric-a-brac. This is one big cultural divide between me and some Ticos and country people in general. I could never put my dogs out for the night. And dogs will bark outside. It is what they do.
Do you keep dogs today and if so, you still keep them outside?
September 13, 2012 at 1:47 am #174219MacgirlMemberI have been seriously thinking of moving to Costa Rico. And I intend to bring my two boxers Sam and Sadie. But just the thought of some one poisening my beloved Boxers would be too much for me to bare. This is enough for me to change my mind and I mean quick. Priscilla
September 13, 2012 at 2:42 pm #174220costaricafincaParticipantWe have five dogs, including an English mastiff. Once dark, they don’t go outside of the property and we all usually go to bed, at 8PM, inside.
We have moved approx. 15Klm. from the farm, but are still in a rural neighborhood, with only the occasional person/vehicle passing our way. More likely, a herd of cows…
BTW back to the OP. I remember reading that the local municipality will get involved in a noise dispute, although this would be between a loud Karaoke bar or an establishment that played loud music after hours, but not wouldn’t get involved with ‘livestock issues’ or barking dogs.September 19, 2012 at 1:25 am #174221lvc1028Member

When I lived in New York City on the floor right above ground level (gringos call it the second floor and Brits would call it the first floor or is the other way around?) on 72nd street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue, the traffic noise 24 hours a day was horrendous… And yes! Those little silicone ear plugs were my saviour!
Because of security reasons we cannot use ear plugs. They do make a difference and having lived 100 meters from the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey for 5 years noise is not a new comer to my life but theses dogs go beyond belief. We checked on every level before we built our home in the Central Valley. All was wonderful for the 3 years and now. Somethings we have no control over such as future building or future renters in tiny obscure unused farm house.
Why not buy a ‘white noise’ machine. Marpac dohm-ds dual speed sound conditioner is supposed to work wonders for snorers, loud music, etc. I don’t know if you can buy it somewhere in CR, but it can be bought on Amazon. While it doesn’t stop the barking dogs, it’ll at least neutralize the noise inside.
