yes, we had an armed guard when i got robbed. they waited until he went off duty at the first light of dawn then hit my house. another incident happened while the guard was on duty. i refuse to live in fear or barricade myself inside my house — i ditched the alarm system which went off when they entered the house but they buried the console under a couple of pillows so nobody heard it. i do place dowels in my sliding doors and windows so they would have a hard time getting past that. and then i have two dogs — one is useless and the other is loco, so i don’t have a clue what good they might be. all of these measures only provide a modicum of protection. if they want in, they will get in, guard or not, alarm system or not, etc.
maybe you should try living in a tico neighborhood , get to know your neighbors, make friends, learn spanish, try to live like a tico and not a rich american locked behind a gate…get the target off your back…
Ticos get robbed just as much unfortunately. We gringos just don’t hear about it as much.

BTW – Having knowledge, awareness, prior planning and taking precautions is not paranoia.

Likewise walking around with blinders on, making excuses and using deference is not paranoia either.

However, I’d gladly take the former over the latter.

The other problem is they might not just be ladrones and my point about you being a single woman living alone seems to be lost in translation…

Like I said, I could dissect your posts one by one and address the falsehoods by why bother. You keep reiterating the same ‘stuff’ over and over and there is no changing your mind.

Good luck to you and Pura Vida.

Wow Maravilla, there are so many things I want to respond too in your posts about guns and about security in general but in the end it won’t change your mind so I’ll bite my tongue. (Or my typing fingers?)

I will say this however; you need to be able to take care of yourself and have the tools necessary to do so. Whether or not that includes a firearm is up to you.

Relying on your neighbors to wake up, have their wits about them and to come running in the middle of the night to save your microwave against possible armed criminals is absurd.

Did you not read about what happened when a gringo stood up against ladrones just last month? One word… CIMA

Security is about multiple and overlapping layers. My advice is to talk to a security expert about reasonable ways to protect yourself sans firearms and to implement those stratagies for both you and your neighbors.

Letting the criminals come in and “dealing with the consequences” are fine when they just want your toaster. But you are a single woman living alone. Think of the implications of that statement for a moment.

The consequences can be more devastating than you think.

Costaricafinca is correct. The days of gringos owning firearms through a corporation are over as of several months ago. There no longer is a back door for owning or “possessing”. You either get a permit as a legal permanent resident/citizen or you get an illegal firearm and pray you don’t need to use it.

In the end, I’d rather be alive than dead or worse for my family so soon it will be decision time…

Our neighbors installed one and were prepared to have it call our telephone when it went off. I told them not to bother. If they thought I was going to saddle up my charger, grab my lance and shield, and go galloping down there to do battle with an unknown number of burglars, armed Heaven only knows how and high on Heaven knows what, and in the dark of night, all to save their microwave, they were just terribly confused.
Thanks for the laugh! I needed that this morning…

Anyway, speaking of security, I had a scary realization the other night when I awoke to some “odd” noises outside and realized my power was out. No big deal other than without power, I have no lights, no phone service, no internet service and being new in country have no cell phone or substantial way to defend myself and family yet.

I subsequently developed a plan of action the next morning but it’s not perfect and it still makes me uneasy until I can resolve my loose ends. ๐Ÿ™

Like soldier said however, having advanced notice is key.

    Update on my shipping situation:

I shipped a 4×4 loaded with personal goods from California to CR with Barry and Arden at ShipCostaRica.

The 4×4 was delivered to me on Good Friday personally by Barry himself with all the goods and a full tank of gas to boot! They even replaced the battery that had gone dead in transit. I cannot say enough about how smooth the process was and not even a single word about delivery on a holiday.

My vehicle also has the registration and plates so was ready to roll. Just to reiterate my earlier post I highly recommend them to anyone. ๐Ÿ˜€

Here are my results from bringing in two cats this week:

We booked our flight for April 1st with Delta from LAX through Atlanta and then on to SJO. We checked two cats as “checked baggage” and they flew in the same planes as us in the cargo hold. We did the typical paperwork only as specified on the CR Consulate website (shots, letter, USDA stuff etc.). The pets arrived shortly after we had grabbed our luggage at 12 noon CR time with no problem and we paid a porter $20 to help us with our luggage and cats through customs and to our driver.

The customs official looked at all the cat paperwork and there was no problem other then him not understanding what a “domestic short hair” cat was. ๐Ÿ˜€ We explained as best we could and he just said ok and stamped the papers.

All said and done the arrival was painless and took less then 60 minutes from disembarking the plane to loading the van and on to our new home. (Of course, it helps that we were ushered to the special needs immigration line due to our happy and smiling baby.)

Anyway, off to play in the jungle!

we’re flying in next week with two cats so I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

However, after talking with the CR consulate, Delta and the USDA nobody has heard of these changes. Could be CA is just confused? ๐Ÿ˜•

I have a 4×4 and a small amount of misc goods that will be delivered to me in the southern zone next week (Good Friday) and so far the service has been excellent. I would recommend Arden and Barry as well. ๐Ÿ˜€
There are a few very talented, young architects building some interesting homes that I came across and an North American that was building a “sustainable” development near Manuel Antonio.
    .
Do you have the link for the ‘sustainable’ development in Manuel Antonio? I’d really like to find one that is doing real ‘sustainable’ development. Thanks!
@redelvis. Thank you for that information. I have come to the same conclusion regarding price, it seems with products like “SuperBloque” or a fabricator of concrete walls the savings is only about 10% over cement block. That said the time frame can be a 1/4 once the product is on site to get your walls and roof up.
There is definitely a difference between something of quality prefabricated offsite for the purpose of less construction waste than something prefabricated offsite for the sole purpose of cost savings. I would definitely continue with your due diligence.

I would hate to save money on an inferior product that would cost me more in lost energy efficiency in the long run due to improper fit. Also, bear in mind the strike-slip fault line located on the west coast as well.
