I’m glad you pointed this out. It somewhat reminds me of the ABCnews 20/20 feature regarding the overzealous minutemaids guarding the US borders from illegal immigrants.

I swear, from the interview not one of them had a complete set of front teeth and probably can’t spell to save their lives. Could that be their recruitment policy?

Oh well, as the saying goes, to give yourself more self-worth push others down.

Well, I always want to make friends rather than enemies. Probably my impression was wrong from what I’ve heard some people say. I am glad to hear your wife getting her Phd from UM, that’s also my brother’s alma mater.

Lighten up on the gringos, I would think most are not out to take advantage of CR. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt. Congrats to your wife.

    Scott,

Sorry you took offence with my comment. I am merely stating a fact how the economics of life works. For good or bad, its not for me to judge, but to close your eye to it is either denial or ignorance. Its not merely Ticas that I indicate with the comment, but practically global from eastern Europe to Russia up to Asia. Do we not have mail-order brides/dating tours/meet-women trips from these countries?

Its just a fact of life. I’m not saying every woman would be chasing Americans, but there are quite a few that would. And truly its not just Americans, but also Canadians/Australians/Japanese/etc. What’s their common denominator, but what else except better economic standing.

    rf2cr,

I replied to your question regarding the container you planned to use. Can you clarify where you are located? thanks.

We are in California, near San Francisco. Just thinking about the logistics here, do you mean Palm Springs near Los Angeles or FLorida.

Kindly clarify. If you are close, I might be interested.

I tend to agree with you, Lotus. Seems like ScottB tends to assume that everyone is out to milk the resources in Costa Rica. This is not intended to be an attack to you personally, but I kind of don’t see what you are contributing to Costa Rica, except probably take a job that a local can certainly fill (you are a real estate agent, true?).

The honest truth is, not to sound mean but merely stating a fact, anyone with an american passport would have women chasing them left and right. Please don’t loose your objectivity, most Americans/Canadian/Europeans bring more to the country than they take, if this were not the case you will not see the government allowing migration to the country.

There’s fact and there’s myth, kindly separate the two.

First, it was Warren Buffett that said “most investors put in more time researching which big screen tv to buy than their big investments”.

Now my reply for the original post. You are investing probably $75K (since you mentioned the downpayment alone is $25K) and you’re not even willing to spend $600 to checkout what you are buying? To put that into perspective, you’re not willing to spend 0.8% of your investment money into research. That my friend is called penny wise but pound foolish.

Do people not read the newspapers? Foreclosures here in the US is at a 12 year high, they’re resorting to auctions just to sell these properties. Put in the time to research big investments, don’t listen to salesmen because the bottomline is that’s their job – to sell.

If Mr. Gale work out in Florida, you can get the local authorities to investigate him for fraud. It is quite easy to file a complaint, and I would only go to the better business bureau later.

This seems like a big enough amount to warrant a federal investigation.

This is a very tough subject. I’m actually on the fence about this one. First and foremost, the law allows law abiding citizens to bear arms, then by all means you have every right to own a gun. But I think this ownership comes with huge responsibilities. You need training and practice in order to be a very responsible gun owner.

PLEASE, if you own a gun, make sure you take the time to try and practice firing in a shooting range. I think this helps prepare you when you actually have to squeeze that trigger.

The police are only permitted to fire upon imminent danger. They are definitely not allowed to use deadly force to prevent theft. There’s a huge distinction here, the price of a human life is not equivalent to that laptop computer we are trying to protect.

I think the most valuable service this website offers is simply the forum. Scott, both good and bad – but mostly good, is very vigilant in monitoring this board and keeps it very informative and likewise a great place to know a bit of the people moving to Costa Rica. Although the censorship can squash opposing views, its a necessary step to keep things civil.

Its very hard to say if this website truly does offer good RE service, but its referral is better than no referral at all. As for RE prices, if you don’t do your homework, then definitely you can make tremendous mistakes in RE investing. This is what’s happening now in the United States where everyone seems to have invested in houses. Its all starting to unravel now, and there’s even a website that keeps count on the number of bankrupt mortgage lenders (last count around 40).

As repeated many times here. Crime is everywhere, here most especially so for “non-violent” property crimes. Its just a fact of life for most developing nations.

Unfortunately, foreigners are a bigger target for these thefts and fraudulent schemes. Why, its simply common sense that they are more likely to have property of value as well as be a bit naive. But I think this is mostly true initially when you move here then you learn quickly. I still have to say, its much much more safer here than most latin/central american countries.

Just be cautious, don’t be too trusting – they will understand it believe me, and make friend with your neighbors – not buy friends by always being the one who ends up paying. That’s surely the best way to attract individuals with different motives.

Is a gun license required to carry? How hard is it to get one?

    Thanks.
