Denise, I may not be much help since we are just starting the process as well. After searching past posts on this site I found a great list of architects, but feel referrals are even better. We have met some many wonderful people in the Domincal and surrounding area that intorduced us to their builders. We have an overwhelming # of choices. The nice thing is we have been able to see everyone’s house so can compare the work. We too thought the well would go first, but David is correct and we found it not really necessary as we have municipality water run to the proprty. We also have a waterfall so will use hydro power as well. A catchment tank is always good. Harness the natural resource of the rain. Our area has a back up water tank for the “neighborhood” in case city water runs out during dry season. We are meeting with someone to help us identify which trees are protected (can’t be removed) and which ones will fall easiest. (remove from structure areas for safety)
We want a soil engineer because we have one area that has quite a slope/drop off and don’t want to slide down the hill! The whole process is quite a task, but I can’t wait to really get started!

Thanks Brian. I am currently in the States, but my husband in still in CR until March.I will let him know what you said. He has been meeting w/some people and wow, prices sure vary. Not that that really surprises me. The driveway-gravel only is $400, real cheap, but of course has to be done over constantly. The concrete price was $6000, but permanent. Have not decided yet. We are thinking like you, build a small thing to stay in first, then stay while building the rest. Would love to talk to you if you want to e-mail your phone #. My email is drmakrs@aol.com

I have just returned to the States. The Hospital is looking good. It is located at the 194KM marker on the Costanera Highway 25 minutes south of Uvita, across the street from San Buenas Golf Resort. It is 80,000 sq, ft. Scheduled to open August 2007, which obviously didn’t happen, but it looks very close to opening. Not sure if it’s public or private but from all I heard I would say public.

Yes, we’d be interested in your contact as a possibility. I was thinking I know some car rental agencies offer them too. We will be doing much exploring and I’d feel more comfortable having a phone.Thank you.

Post here or you can e-mail me at drmakrs@aol.com

Thank you. I will definately look into these. I never dreamed AT & T would land me with a $452 phone bill to make a few reservations, talk to friend and husband. I missed my husband and wanted to hear his voice, but not at $120 for 30 min.!

I’d actually like to know what is the cheapest way to call both ways. My husband spent the last 2 months in CR and I was shocked when I received phone bill.(Not happy at all)Calling from CA to CR was like $4 minute. I am leaving for CR in two days and will need to call back to CA once in a while on this trip. Rent a cell phone the best for local calls? How about international calls?

    Thanks,

I agree this site helps everyone. I have learned alot from it and if it helps keep developers in check-better for us. Thank you Scott for this great aid. And YES, I have your book-it’s awesome. Anyone would be a fool to buy anything without reading it first!

Thanks David for your info. Will discuss with our vet in CA. I’m assuming PetMed and other U.S. K-9 pet med companies can not ship to CR. I certainly don’t need to get mixed up in a drug trafficing scene! Not sure if vet would be able to ship a controlled substance or not. Maybe if it has been eleminated in CR they can. Something to look into. Other alternatives sound like a safer, easier choice.Do you happen to know what anticonvulsive medicines are available in CR so we can discuss with our vet?

Again, thanks for all your info so far!

Nice to know they at least have 24 hour clinics. Not so sure we want to be near SJ but that’s another story! Obviously, the prescriptions remain the biggest question but it must be possible.

We too are considering CR. Our Border Collie is on phenobarbital 3x a day with a valium prescription as well, in case of clusters. Has anyone figured out if vets do meds? I am assuming they do. Many regular pharmacies also do fill K-9 meds but unsure of this in CR. It is very regulated in CA to where they take my DL# and DOB but other than that, easy to fill. No way I can move to CR if my baby doesn’t get to come too. She’s only 3.

As Tom answered Scott’s question, yes, seems to be fairly common.I too was told caused by inbreeding, puppy mills..
