”You can still live on the guaranteed $1,000 monthly income if it is necessary” but this is very hard to do if you want to run a car and pay rent!! If you purchase a home outright, this makes a huge difference… but some of us suggest you rent first to see if your chosen area is the right one for the long run.
The OP didn’t mention whether he was aware of the funds required to apply for residency, so please check out this website which can explain what is required.

David mentions “If you’re not here to watch the progress, correctable mistakes will be made, and (equally important) real opportunities will be overlooked and lost” and this is certainly right.
Don’t always presume though, that you know better than local builders, who understand many things that that they do here, we as extranjeros will never understand.
We have met many very talented and knowledgeable people in the construction business here but also some that possibly never played with Lego…

Keep in mind that living at the beach can mean hot, humid and higher electricity costs due to the use of A/C.

3dogsrule living here legally requires residency, which requires unmarried couples to apply sererately. You may want to check out the requirements

davidd have you not been reading about the many large companies that do not pay their monthly fees, including the US Embassy?

Ex-pats are in the minority here, so our payments are only a drop in the bucket.

Rainbow, there isn’t much to choose from, unless you already have an insurance policy from the USA that will reimburse you. If you are under 70 and have no pre-existing conditions, there is INS.

Also, be aware that CAJA may not cover all of your Rx’s so you will be required to purchase them ‘over the counter’ which is what you will have to do, until you have your cedula (which can take a year or more) and can then use CAJA services.

costaricabill, I had saved this address, but was advised that it may not be people friendly, unless you are a pharmacist. Sometimes the link works….and sometimes it doesn’t 😉

Right now in the interior of Guanacaste, it is still very hot, dry and windy again.
I hate the wind at night!!!
The CV tends to be cooler, as the poster above points out.
Finding the place that suits you, requires time… not just a day visit, but either trips taken at various times of the year or a year long stay to really get a better idea of the conditions you will deal with. Of course, some ‘rainy’ seasons are longer than others…or sometimes it just seems to last forever 🙄
Some people move here and only want to grow mangoes, and that does not happen all over the country.

No, they rely on growing their own new plants from the ‘free seeds’ on their bushes.

You can purchase an air rifle at most hardware stores, without a license.

This would likely apply if you are renting a property that is managed by a property management company, but not necessarily if you are renting from an individual.

I agree with David that the issue of coffee rust that has been lingering around for years, must be solved. We, too, used to operate a coffee farm but never made any money on it, although the neighbors and workers who maintained it, fertilized and picked it, did 🙄
We thoroughly enjoyed doing so, but would never purchase another one.
