Again, thanks to everyone who replied. The answers confirmed what I thought already so no matter how much I am attracted to the Wranglers here in the States, I’ll refrain from buying one. The Toyota FJ Cruiser isn’t on my list due to price and how UGLY it is. Ugh. I’m going to look at used Land Rovers and newer Hyundais and Kias too. I’m still trying to figure out the import duty thing too. As I understand it, the older the car, the higher the percentage. What can y’all add to my knowledge base?

I got lost in the threads………… did anybody ever say what kind of medical care is readily available in the Arenal area? We haven’t visited there yet but it’s on our list of places to check out.

I checked this out on our last visit to CR as I am also type 1. Best I could find out was that CAJA will supply one needle per day, no strips, no meters. There are both kinds of insulin available (fast and slow) under different names. Couldn’t find out the prices yet. I just posted an inquiry 10 minutes ago trying to find out about insulin pump supplies being shipped in. I only use Humalog with the pump but also use a Continuous Glucose Monitoring system (sensor implant) that I want to import from the states. If not, it’s back to Lantus for me too. Share anything else you learn while you’re digging around and I’ll do the same. Vikki
majicmerlin4 this question has been asked before, but obvious;y not to many diabetics are on this forum…
I’m a type 1 diabetic too and have been investigating how I will manage my diabetes. So far I’ve learned that my pump supplies can be shipped to me but only for a 3 month supply at a time (insurance company regs.) I’m going to check into the use of a US mailbox service as well as the possibility of using FedEx. Hopefully it won’t be cost-prohibitive. I also found a man whose Mexican company is planning to expand their pump sales into CR in the next year or so.

Getting a short-acting insulin shouldn’t be a problem but no, CAJA isn’t a good choice. That lady who said they only supply one needle a day answered my inquiry on the ARCR website and I’ve had one or two other people tell me the same thing. I’m curious as to how much it cost you to buy Humalog over the counter?

Since Walmart has a presence in CR already, I’m hoping they might realize the market for American pharmaceuticals to the expat community. Some drugs you can live without but not insulin if you’re dependent.
Alexander,
Would you mind being reporting back to the forum from time to time as you pursue an off-grid solar system? It wasn’t that long ago that PV systems were not cost effective, but today initial costs have decreased significantly and with proper planning in terms of looking for ways to reduce load, PV systems are not affordable, though not cheap.

While I’m still in the U.S., solar power is an area I intend to pursue when I arrive in CR.

Good luck in your quest. Believe you are on the right track
Same here! I really want to do solar, wind, or hydro when we get to CR next year. Please keep this thread going and tell us all how it works out. I did see some adverts in the Tico Times too (yes, we subscribe and yes, I know some of you think it’s too negative, but it helps us as we prepare for our move.)

    Thanks!

    anyone had experience with

    http://www.renta4x4incostarica.com ?

    they look more affordable

    thanks
Yes, we rented from them on our first trip to CR and had both good and bad. Our car broke down (after some long, bumpy driving) and the manager was hard to reach. When we did reach him, we had a replacement car promptly. We even got reimbursed for filling up two cars. Plus they offered GPS and a cell phone and insurance. All in all, we’d say it was a good experience.
