MemberI agree that if you are investing a lot of money etc…it is wise to follow the rules and become “legal”. I guess I know a few surfer types that don’t have the money to qualify for “legal” status and do the tourist thing, leaving every few months. They have jobs and most have quite a few Tico friends etc..They either work in hotels or teach surfing or take others on surf tours. I have to say Maravilla I’m surprised to hear your hard line stance on this immigration thing”I would prefer to stay away from people like this”. Is that your attitude towards the Mexicans that live in Colorado? I’m not trying to be sassy, it’s a sincere question. Also if you do leave every 90 days for the purpose of staying within the rules shouldn’t you be alright?

MemberI could not find one tackle shop in the central pacific area when I was looking to rent some gear. I was able too hire a local and his boat for 4 hours for about $200 and we did some inshore fishing. It included all the gear and fresh fruit, drinks etc…I just can not remember the name of this place, but it is a tico beach just south of Los Suenos, at the end of the road you go left instead of right to Los Suenos. We just drove in one afternoon and asked around, that’s how we found him. There is also an excellent fishing column in the Tico times and you can e mail him with questions.

MemberGT…put very well, you have just put into words what I have personally witnessed going on in Cost Rica among the many small businesses and with friends living in and around Jaco. As they say there is the official policy and the real world policy, NYC is full of such scenarios.

MemberI found it was really difficult to locate actual properties over the Internet. You just have to get down there again stay at some small hotel in Playa Hermosa and start talking to people. Can you get into some of your experiences, what you’ve seen, liked and didn’t like? Get in touch with Johanna at Ola Bonita(hotel) in playa Hermosa. A wonderful Tica who is related to half the locals in the area. just built her own beautiful home and runs a small hotel. Perhaps you can find her on the Internet I can not find her #. I watched her house go up, she had a great local architect and builders who built an amazing mediterranean style home for her and her family….husbands Italian. That was our problem we only wanted to live near Hermosa and it’s getting really expensive!!

MemberSteve you are not from NYC by any chance? My girl friend worked with a guy who was looking to buy in Alajuela about 6 months ago…it’s a small world you never know.

MemberPlaya Hermosa is amazing, I bought in Columbus Heights as we wanted to build our own home rather than have the developer of the land do it and we just love the area(I Surf). I know all the dirt on one of the principles, but when I signed a contract prices were rock bottom so after speaking with everyone involved I bit the bullet an signed. They have now started the roads etc…and I received a letter from there attorneys stating all the lots have been surveyed, registered etc..and I will be closing in September…There are a couple of very professional outfits in Jaco that will manage your property while you are away and handle renting it as well. “Opera” is a great established neighborhood and the homes are on 700 to 1000M2 lots approx. It’s about 1km down calle Hermosa, there are a few other developments back there as well and up in the hills. Adam may be a good source to show you around.

MemberThere is a great neighborhood in Playa Hermosa called Opera Salvaje. This is not a gated community but is an established neighborhood with homes for sale in the $200k range. Try Adams site http://www.centralpacificrealty.com He has a few listings in Opera posted and as you know this is a great area. Adam has a solid rep in Hermosa and can be trusted.

MemberThere are a few projects other than Paragons in Parrita. I would agree with dkt2u that if you were looking at the posted ads and were concerned you could have easily written down the posters contact info. Then we all would not be speculating about the mysterious post…

MemberI have to wonder just how relavant these reports are? I live in NYC with a great police force etc…I could fill the pages of this forum up everyday with the violent crime that happens here on a daily basis. Just a few weeks ago a teenager from New Jersey was at a night club here, was picked up by a cab and found murdered a few days later. The cab driver and his junkie/prostitute girlfriend commited the crime. I guess what i’m trying to say is if people were to read crime bulletins on the U.S. no one in there right mind would visit us! I appreciate the information you are shareing but am trying to keep everything in perspective. I know that when I discuss travel to central America with American friends, a lot of them look a me like i’m crazy and then I point out the cime stats in our own country.
