When we spoke with builder than have used this system, the comments were always the same, that if you are in a windy area, problems will arise.
And most ’qualified builders' are not in favor of these buildings.

As David mentions, ARCR, does offer the chance to use the group rates if one is a member, but one has to take into consideration the cost of the yearly membership.

Living next to a bar or salon where fiestas and weddings are frequently held, you can complain to the municipality and may have it acted upon, but for traffic noise with vehicles that come into your area, this traffic is constantly changing, so it would have to be a country wide rules and even then the big trucks come in from elsewhere in Central America on there way to somewhere else.
Have you considered added a water feature outside to help reduce the noise?

You cannot legally work her unless you have permanent residency, and even if you did the salary will be a fraction of what you are presentltly earning. Please read these, Residency rules which will explain.
Note: as of March 1st. 2010, the monetary requirements will change

I know one couple personally and have read about many others who are paying over $100 per month for CAJA so be prepared to pay more.
Make sure that you also have enough to pay for private medical services, that you may decide to pay for, out of pocket, rather than wait for extended periods, for referral to specialists, etc.

We looked into this a few months ago for some friends, and was told as long as you have your plan drawn up in the ‘widths of panels’ offered you can have a lot of choices. There was also a choice of 8′,10′ and 12′ wall heights. This was in Upala, Guanacaste. Of course, then you must have your plan approved, etc. which will increase the cost, but what they offer on their architect approved ‘plan’ is included.
If there was a choice between these and the ‘tin-can container homes’, it is a ‘no brainer’ as by the time you add AC, deck, a roof …which if you don’t have you will have sun & rain coming in every window… and supports to cover the container these are a lot better deal.

Yes, these rates seem to be more or less, the same all over the country. And, in most cases I would expect that someone offering just the personal care, would be enough.
I was on ’the receiving end' of such care for two months and had no complaints, whatsoever.

*I would add that the original post was regarding ‘Founding a community of retirees’ has been offered in many planning stages, by many developers and have been discarded because it just hasn’t caught on.
Those of us who moved here, I would presume, chose to live individually amongst the Ticos, whether in an apartment or in our own home and not ‘trying to live’ likewe could if we moved to a retirement mecca like Florida.
And you could ‘bet’ that if one did choose to live in a ’community of retirees' the cost for this type ‘personal care’ would not be the same.

It takes a lot of seasoning to make them taste better…

Locals cover them with mayonnaise to add taste…

I love the wood, though, and have a few items made from it.
Be very careful if you get stuck by a ‘thorn’ from this palm, as it goes in like a fish hook and must be removed with a razor blade, then apply lots of anti-biotic cream.

Just realized when passport was mentioned and that you don’t have one, as yet. You mentioned you will be coming in Feb, but you must have one to get here in Feb but I highly doubt you will get one in time, unless it is much faster in the USA than in Canada.

As mentioned, social skills are very important, and I admire what I have seen in the schools I have observed, but if I had school age children whilst living here, I would choose a private school.
Of course ’my child' would already have English language skills and hopefully they would have learned enough Spanish to mix with their peers, both in their neighborhood and at school.
