ParticipantI posted a similar story a few months ago, in that some friends went to their property near Puerto Viejo and found that their wooden duplex was gone. Nothing remained…
They, too, had a caretaker….costaricafinca
ParticipantIn this instance, it would be a good idea to check out the Container Homes although, considering the humidity there, mold could be a problem. There is one shown that the ‘deck’ I think, folded up to lock it securely.
I agree with the previous poster, otherwise, even going to town could be a problem.costaricafinca
ParticipantI, too, recommend the ceramic tiles for pizza and pitas.
A neighbor/friend just built a wood burning oven, and it takes ‘ages’ to heat up enough to bake anything…costaricafinca
ParticipantWe tried one of the alarms that ‘sounds like your dog barking’ and all it did was upset the dogs!
The ‘thieves’ look for any sign of dogs…then poison them.
We lost lot’s of both electric and hand tools, phones, motor cycle helmets, GPS, stuff from the truck, and other miscellaneous items….during one robbery.
But the worst was the loss of our dogs.
Irreplaceable.costaricafinca
ParticipantWe have a couple of motion sensors and there are better than nothing, although some nocturnal animals and the wind blowing my plants sets them off.
The alarm system we had installed, is wireless, so no power is no problem. So consider wireless, if you do decide to put in an alarm.
When we had an intended robbery a few months ago, the culprits ‘cut the phone wires’ and got had got in through the window, when the alarm went off….very loudly. Then they got out..quick! Luckily we were nearby.costaricafinca
ParticipantCheck with persons living in your immediate neighborhood for recommendations for both ‘follow up’ and routine maintenance. It won’t help you, if someone recommends a company in the Central Valley or Jaco.
We ‘believed’ the salesman’s spiel, then they never completed the job or return to fix ongoing problems.
We spoke with the supplier of the equipment after unsuccessfully dealing with problems, and they stated ’we cannot stop these bad companies buying and installing our products’.
Realize too, that will probably not respond to an alarm going off….costaricafinca
ParticipantMost of the supermarkets stock Bioland products and include many different products. Bioland
There are small health food stores all over the country and are called ‘Microbioticas’.costaricafinca
ParticipantI use Biolands ‘German de trigo’ or their Afreho ‘Fibra natural’…and it works fine for my pizzas 8)
I have problems sometimes finding Semolina flour for pasta, but that can also be found at an Auto mercado…if you’re lucky.costaricafinca
ParticipantIt may be possible, but here is a link to try TicaBus although I couldn’t find any info on where to purchase one, online.

ParticipantI should have added, that that is what we done, purchased a one way fully refundable return ticket, then got our money back later.
And, I don’t think getting a refund on the the bus ticket would be so easy, since you will be possibly out of the country at that point…
We just ate the loss of the bus tickets….we were so glad that we didn’t have the same problem the next time!
Just be sure that your passport is still valid, showing that you are under the allowable 90 days, else you may not get a ticket.costaricafinca
ParticipantSince it is the airlines that insist you have a return ticket, you are ’at their mercy', whether they will let you board the plane in the USA when you try to fly here.
Many have done it with no problem, but I am one who have been denied boarding until a return ticket has been purchased.
It has been said that that this is happening much more often, now.
We did buy a bus ticket for another time, but one-way tickets are often much more expensive.costaricafinca
ParticipantSome friends who live in Naranjo went there over the Christmas vacation. Said there were “5 cows per person, and even more sheep…”. And ‘flat, flat , flat…’
They found very little in the way of fruit and veggies. Of course, as a tourist one may not be able to find the markets, etc.
While they liked some of the old towns, they didn’t find the scenery, picturesque…costaricafinca
ParticipantOn the coast, especially on the Osa peninsula, it is hot and very humid….
You would need to check out what is presently growing there to give you an idea.costaricafinca
ParticipantIn response to ”drive a crappy car,” most in the small town where we live, drive very new, expensive ones!
Squatters are mostly found on land, on which has reverted to ‘public’ use, for many reasons. Then a group are there at 6am, on the day that they know in advance, they they run in, and mark their boundaries, like the ‘old timers’ in the USA…and start to put up a ‘dwelling…’
But, it is definitely unwise to leave a furnished house for an extended length of time. We leave ours, but we have a workers home nearby. And we do have an alarm systems in both homes and keep our dogs in at night, after two died when poisoned by a robber.
If, you only go as far as purchasing some land, depending on where it is of course, and leaving it ‘as is’ and arrange for a local to keep their cows on it, for instance, in lieu of payment, it may be worth considering.
But, do visit and make sure any land you are considering has water/access to power if you wish to add a house.
Check out farms for sale, that are already in operation and have houses on it for a caretaker as well, who often will come with farm, and has the required services. It may be cheaper in the long run.costaricafinca
ParticipantThey are a reasonable price at the ConstruPlaza, and about half of what they are charging up near Tilaran, when I saw them there. I once saw a beautiful pedestal version at ConstruPlaza with the pedestal painted to match.
