ParticipantI don’t think the rainy season can be explained that simply. A rainy day at your house could be very different from my house.
Many areas have rain for days at a time.
When it rains, the rain is often very heavy.
Flooding in many areas, every year.
Avoid choosing or living in a property at the bottom of a hill. Especially, if there is a river near by. Or even the signs that there may be one.
When you drive past an area that grows tomatoes and they are covered, it is for the protection from this, heavy rain.
Some areas have rain all year. Or fog.
But it can get cool…but not really cold…costaricafinca
ParticipantHead into ‘town’. Try Alyss the department store, and Artistica downtown has the best prices.

ParticipantAlthough I wasn’t going to add anything more to this post, I changed my mind.
The originator of the post in question, obviously has a problem, and it seems to be the area he is living in. So, don’t judge Canada or Canadians by one racist.
He hasn’t said that he has even been to Costa Rica, has he?
Or let us know his ’sign in name' to see if & how he had expressed his opinions in the past.
Has he made any response to any of our replies?
Since we have not lived in Canada for 9 years, and lived in a different province I know that my experiences will differ from his, but when returning or talking to recent ex-pats, I have never heard what he has stated. Displeasure with the tax system, sure.costaricafinca
ParticipantAs a Canadian who replied to the other thread, I posted my view on the article, and have no interest into getting into either the religious or discriminatory arguments.

ParticipantAlthough a Canadian, we have lived in Costa Rica for over 9 years. We also lived in a part of Canada where there wasn’t many visible Muslims but lots of hippies…
Where our children and children live now, a city in the interior of BC, Canada there are indeed East Indians families but there is no problem with them being accepted into this community. They have their temple and they way of life but it definitely doesn’t seem to be a concern in the community.
Yes, the wait for hospitals and doctors have increased for many reason.
Oh, by the way, we immigrated to Canada from the UK in 1971 and lived there for 29 years. We left for a few reasons and high taxes were part of it but weather was the most important reason. While we love it here in Costa Rica, my husband would return in a ‘heartbeat….’
John will find many things to complain about when he moves here, I am sure….and then may realize what he is missing.I neglected to add this part, which I had put on the ‘comment’ part where other comment have been made’
“I would think the law he is referring to is that separate residences requires the accommodations to be ‘legal’ as in a legal suite with the required exits, windows, etc that many municipalities insist on, to stop the renting out of basements that are considered ‘unfit for habitation’.”
And Mr John Oldham, I would mention to you, to keep your ’thoughts to yourself' when you make the move to Costa Rica because you will not be popular amongst other Canadians, of that I am quite sure.
I really hope Scott will delete this article and like the other poster, I don’t expect he will stay…costaricafinca
ParticipantWe got ours near Fortuna de Bagaces in the interior of Guanacaste.

ParticipantAt least this helps to make it harder for them to be stolen…...and this would be a concern here.
Where we got ours from, they told us that they lose some ‘quite frequently…”costaricafinca
ParticipantThat is one concern: what will come after the peacocks, especially if near park land. If you have boars nearby, I would say ‘forget it’.

ParticipantWe have two, but they are still very small, one is 2 months and another is 2 weeks so as of yet, they are still confined to the hen house….out of reach of the dogs.
You will need a good sized area for them to roam, and I am told they can get quite noisy 🙄
The ‘mother’ who hatched them is a turkey…really!
We are in the interior of Guanacaste, so I don’t know where you could get some, locally.costaricafinca
ParticipantThings ot do around Guayabo de Bagaces in the interior, and is about 40 mins from Liberia.

While you are in the area, you might consider taking guests to the Geo-thermal electric plant on Miravalles Volcano – Planta Miravalles. Also there is a new wind farm that you will pass.
The is a lovely waterfall is called “Llanos del Cortes” and is just north of Bagaces. As you are going north from Bagaces, it will be a left turn and there is a sign, ‘Cataratas’. Travel down a gravel road for a short while and at the end is the waterfall and a parking area. It is a great place with a little calm “bay” for swimming and howler monkeys, often overhead.
For the Rio Celeste, from the PanAm Highway, head north to Upala on Route 6. Go through Bijagua (or stop and have lunch) and drive to the road that is the entrance to the Tenorio National Park. Turn right here and follow the road to the Park entrance. It’s about a 3 km hike through the rainforest to the river and the gorgeous, huge waterfall. It’s not a simple walk in the park – there is some up and down – but it’s not all that difficult.
Part of this post has been copied & pasted from elsewhere…costaricafinca
ParticipantTake your mangos and worms in a plastic baggie, to your local hardware or animal feed store. They will tell you what you need.

ParticipantWe are helping a young woman through nursing school. She was/is self motivated, which is why we have chosen to help her.
As with any students anywhere, if the want to learn …they will.
Her brother, is a whole different scenario….costaricafinca
ParticipantAs an ex-pat from Canada I just ignore these posts, i e political….

ParticipantAnother potential snag is if you happen to get ‘shut out’ of your online account, you have to go in person to get it corrected…..
Our water bill also requires payment in personcostaricafinca
ParticipantWhen someone asks about construction prices and then mentions a ‘low/strict budget’ I recommend buying an existing property. At least you know the cost….
Many to choose from, and you could get a really good deal right now. -
