Looking for advice on paying property taxes for a lot I purchased in Cortez. I closed the deal in Feb this year. The attorney I hired when I bought the property wants over $600.00 to pay my $185.00 tax bill. A little steep I thought. I live in Canada and would love to pay them from here via internet but don’t know how to go about it. Most of my attempts regarding research in this area nets me Spanish text sites which I don’t understand yet. Does anyone know where I can go to find out when taxes are due and where to pay them etc? My last resort would be to fly there and pay them in person, enjoy the place for a week and fly home although time is at a premium at the moment. Thanking in advance for any help you could provide me.

    Hi Darren

I live in Canada as well and own land in a different Municipality. I would ask your Realtor to have his administrative assistant pay the taxes for you and you can just email money transfer the funds using Interac to their bank account. They will likely require the funds first. My Realtor has never charged me a fee for paying the taxes.
I believe there is secure indoor storage on the road from highway 21 to Playa del Coco (on the north side before the turn off to Hermosa). I think it is owned by K-West. The only number I have is old but you could try – 2670-0011.
Thanks Johnr
Can anyone give me some advice on where to rent a reliable rental car near SJO airport. We are traveling all over the country during the two weeks we will be there and do not want to deal with break-downs. I understand that there are insurances that we need to have but the last time I rented, I had no idea if what I paid was fair or not. Insurance was more than the rental. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks

We have rented from Toyota Rent A Car a number of times, which I believe is a division of Purdy Motors, the local Toyota Dealer. Their vehicles have been first class, new models in great condition, which is a key when travelling the back roads. We even had an accident with the vehicle and did not have the extra CDW insurance. I was impressed by how they settled the claim and truly amazed at how inexpensive the repair charges were – likely due to the lower cost of labor in CR. They may not be the cheapest, but you can travel safely knowing you have a reliable vehicle.

    Hi Joker:

I would be very careful with your selection of a school in Costa Rica. We moved to Costa Rica for one year with our 15 year old son (Grade 10) and enrolled him in the Country Day School in Guanacaste. The school was not even close to the equivalent of schools in Canada in terms of academics. He had a great experience living in a different country and expanding his Spanish language skills, but in terms of academics the school was less than adequate. As a result we are back in Canada again so he can complete his high school and University education.

    Good luck!

I purchased a used 4×4 Toyota Landcruiser in San Jose a few months ago and it was really quite simple. I had sourced the vehicle on the internet and when I got to San Jose I asked the owner if he could bring the car to my hotel for a test drive. I found that a buyer that sounded seriously interested was enough to make the vendor very eager to bring the vehicle to the hotel. After the test drive, I asked if I could have the vehicle mechanically inspected (including emissions testing) and he agreed. After the vehicle inspection, I had him send the title documents that he had to my lawyer and they researched the title to ensure that the transfer of ownership would be seamless. I was in San Jose for two days to complete the entire transaction. It was a simple process and I would not hesitate to do it again.

Best of luck with your transaction.

Thanks for the reply and the advice about the motorcycle license. Do you happen to know the name/address of the licensing office in San Jose?

Thanks for the advice. Do you recall the name and number of the person that walked you through the process in San Jose?

My apologies Tracy. In an earlier thread you spoke about wanting to life in Surfside, which is close to Sugar Beach. Hence the recommendation for Sugar Beach Hotel.

It is a safe place. The hotel can arrange transportation for you (taxi or bus) or you can have a rental car brought to the hotel if you like. You will likely want to rent a car for a few days anyway to be able to have a look around. You won’t have any problems travelling alone in this area.

I would recommend Sugar Beach Hotel. A quaint beachfront boutique hotel with about 30 rooms. See http://www.sugar-beach.com for more info. I have stayed there many times and it is very close to surfside, just north of Potrero.
