Here is a great site regarding bamboo construction:

    http://www.vegetablesteel.com/

    http://www.networkearth.org/naturalbuilding/bamboo.html

There is also some people buiding with Bamboo in Playa Hermosa/Jaco they are about a 1/2 mile off the costa nera down Calle Hermosa. I am also very interested in alternative building ideas for CR, my only concern regarding bamboo is fire, as there seem to be no real fire houses near the beaches. Especially since my house will be a vacation home. I also know of a guy building with local woods and some concrete producing a rough hewn type home for about $35 dollars a square foot.

I do not no any of these folks i’m just passing on some info…goodluck!

It is silly they have not removed this from there video, because anyone who is familiar with Play Hermosa knows there is no need for a closer airport. Even without the highway being completed it is a simple and scenic ride to Jaco, 2 hours at most and usualy takes me 1.5 hours. And based on the number of condos and other developements this area is on fire! All that said, they have followed through on the project, A friend just returned and they are cutting roads etc…sure it’s not for everyone, I know Debbie would never buy from them, Lol!

I know there is a guy in Jaco I met while looking at houses to rent. If I can find the web site I will pass it on, they do everything from watching vacant homes to landscaping, rentals…the works.

Tom it sounds like you are off of Calle Hermosa. Is the the development up the concrete road to the left and some of the lots have building “pods” cut out for a house? We also have property about two mile south of where you are up in the hills, they have just started the roads and such. We have been going to Hermosa for about 5 years. We’ll be back down for most of December staying at the Costa Nera. Things sure have changed quite a bit in the area from just last year, curious to see all the changes. Here is a sight you may be interested in: http://www.centralpacificrealty.com Adam has lived in the area for quite awhile, you can see some homes he has built and stuff for sale in Opera Salvje etc…

I have the cirrus and plus on my Chase debit card, and I agree the atms are great for getting cash, some of the atm’s would not dispense cash. I think the Bank Of San Jose always works and was the only one in Jaco I could get cash from. Si if you find one that does’nt work just try another bank.

I think you are out of luck. My friend had a similar situation with movers here in the U.S. and after all the back and forth, calls, threats etc…there insurance company paid pennies on the dollar for the damages. I am in the real estate business here in NYC and I know the kind of rep we have along with lawyers, but I would put movers at the top of the scum list! I am often solicited by them to refer clients and on many occasions they have bluntly told me that whatever price they quote it will be much higher in the end. If you can find an honest mover pay the price, never just pick one out of the yellow pages!

    Diego,

I agree with you on the state of the U.S. and live quite a different life than most here in the land of metro men/women; NYC..lol. I did just get back from some golf with a buddy who is a crane operator and would agree with most of your positions. Pura Vida.

When you can see that we are all connected universaly by an unborn source riding along in various bodily shapes you can love all humanity equally, all life forms for that matter, there will be no need to judge or dominate. If you look at how chimps organize and live in there societys you will see something that greatly mirrors your idea of social structure for humans everyone has there assigned role, it’s very interesting and they get to pi** outside all they want. Mirroring chimp society is not my idea of evolving, I don’t think living the way people did here in the 1950’s is necessarily progress. There can be a deeper broader brave new world that we can aspire to and there are large groups of people out there striving for this and it won’t happen in a lifetime but all good things take time. However we may not be able to change the whole world today we can change ourselves. I have a great relationship with a beautiful, intelligent woman we respect each other, don’t take each other for granted. I don’t need to dominate her to feel like a man, she has never nagged me in the stereotypical scenarios you propose. You define men in such a limited primitive fashion, suggest serving in the millitary makes one a man and how dare we speak out out if we have not. I guess I could call you “Dingo” the way you like to refer to me as “Loutus” is that your way of expressing your manly confidence? serving up a helping of your spicey stew? It’s really very 10 year old boy stuff, don’t you think? I do agree with you regarding the media, hence I watch very little TV. I am sure though I can hardly understand all of who you are from this forum and I know you will never know all of who I am. At the end of all this we are a couple of guys with some opinions about things writing away on a forum on Costa Rica of all things? I wish you peace and happyness and perhaps one day our paths will cross and I’ll buy you a beer somewhere in Costa Rica where we are each pursuing our own Pura Vida.

    Best,
    Keith

Diego has an opinion, I don’t think anyone here is going to change it. And in the bigger scheme of things does his view of the roles of men and woman, the media etc…carry any real weight or significance. I’m sure the boys on the ranch get a kick out of it though. Hey Diego take it easy on the bail jumpers…they’re people to.Lol!

Since I surf and have spent some time exploring different parts of the Pacific coast for both waves and property, Ill throw in my two cents.

Although around Jaco the real estate market is red hot, it is possible to find either a condo or small house for under $200k. Scott has a few of the condo projects listed here. You could look for a house south of Jaco from Playa Hermosa to Dominical where there is great surf and homes that can be found. I really like the break at Hermosa and the location, close to Jaco, Manuel Antonio and less than 2 hours to the airport/San Jose. You would probaly be better off finding a piece of land and building your own home and although it won’t easy you can find a buildable lot for $50-$100k from Jaco to Bejuco, maybe even with an ocean view, and then build for approx. $60 per square foot. These areas are on fire with development but offer a good near to long term investment in my opinion. If you have a longer outlook you may want to investigate the Osa as it appears development is really picking up down there but prices are all over the board so you will need to get on the ground and really do some investigating and find a really connected local broker to show you around. THis is all almost impossible to do over the internet, you have to get down there, maybe make a connection with one of the brokers Scott recomends to get started. I will list a few real estate sites but i;mnot certain Scott will alow them to stay up based on the commercial posting rule:

http://www.centralpacificrealty.com Adam is someone I have met and came recommended by a few good friends in Playa Hermosa, although his site can be a bit outdated it’s best to speak with him. Bob is building little surf communities in Bejuco(fnished) and Esterillos (underway) There have been some mixed reviews on the current one. I know Bob and have surfed with him and he is a solid guy with a good rep in the area. Do your homework, http://www.costaricaltd.com

    Best of luck!

Don’t you think the “extremists” are a tiny fraction of the Muslim population? Most Muslims I know here in NYC are to busy trying to support there familys to worry about jihad (and I would guess it is the same all over the world) and although some may dislike “our” policies they are most likely not going to blow themselves up on a train or murder people. They may have concerns but they are usualy symptamatic of conditions, say social/political in the country they are living in. Through out the 60’s 70’s and 80’s you did’nt here much about Muslim world domination even after the revolution in Iran. It seems the U.S. government has achieved what it set out to do, make us all paranoid that the Muslims want to rule the whole world and wont rest until all U.S. women are in burkas and prayers are called out from every corner. Sounds a bit familiar, like the cold war and kids taking shelter under desks ready for when the big one hit. There is a saying “All things will pass” and so shall this. Again I will make the comparison that a lot of these Islamic countries are at least 500 years behind us, remember the crusades, all the burnings in England under Elizabeth( and many others) if you were of the wrong Christian faith all the slaughter we did in the name of God? How many millions perished under the flag of the cross? The history of modern( and I believe false) Christianity has more blood on it’s hands than a butcher in a slaughter house. Many Americans seem to be a bit forgetful of our recent history, and please I am not raising the flag for Muslims so don’t get your panties in a twist and call me un American! My hope and point is most people want the same things we all want, and policy and diplomacy is the way to make that happen and yes it will take time. I know we like things to happn fast, tomorrow or next week…but bombing the hell out of a country and killing 600,000 people plus is not going to make the world any safer for anyone, tell me how can it?

We were safer when Sadam was in control. Yes we all know what he was, but there actually was a degree of diversity there compared to say Saudi Arabia who our president considers dear friends of ours. He was able to keep the country working and even with all our weapons and the threat of our heavy hand this place is on the brink of civil war. Facts: over 600,000 Iraq’s killed, over 3000 Americans dead and another 15,000 severely wounded and god know how many psycologicaly wounded! Why!!?? We must ask ourselves does the attack by a bunch of radical extremists justify our response, all the deaths and destrcution? Meditate on these facts and ask yourself again what have we gained, how the hell are we any safer!? If they want to put a bomb in a mall. church, bus etc…they can and will war or no war, why they have’nt I don’t know. Possibly they have acheived what they set out to do…start a war!
