ParticipantDepending on why, you are considering this, you should focus more on local Ticos for purchasing Tilapia as they are the main buyers of this fish….which they more often than not, ‘deep fry’ them until it has no taste.
But many like to go and catch their own at local small restaurants. And in the countryside, they are ‘all over the place’ many just in a hole in the ground….like ours:lol:
So, if you are contemplate leasing the pond, you may have to lease the restaurant as well.costaricafinca
ParticipantAn updated post from the first poster:
”OK – the Costa Rican Consulate in NYC called back and told my fiance that there has not been a change in the law and there are no additional charges. So I called Continental’s Safe Pet department and this is what they told me:
There is now a 24.24% import tax calculated on:
* The value of the animal (minimum of $50) plus
* Insurance (minimum of $10) plus
* Total shipping chargeThere are also the following charges:
* $60 – import permit
* $30 – import feeand if the animal is not accompanied there is a $90 charge to pick up at the warehouse or a $100 to pick up at the terminal.
The woman said they got this information from Continental’s management and that the only contact information is the Dept of Agriculture in Costa Rica. She was reading from the communication memo and said that a broker was also required.
Let’s hope the consulate is correct.”
Other folk have also reported phone calls regarding this same matter, but only from Continental
The sale of Pedigreed dogs is a big business, and the dogs are often sent ‘unescorted’ so maybe this is why ‘brokers’ were necessary before, are now being made mandatory for any importation any animal coming into Costa Rica.

ParticipantDid you phone Continentals office in Costa Rica?

ParticipantIf you are flying from Costa Rica one must contact the US Embassy for info on a broker. So, I would presume, that if one was flying to Canada, one would contact the Canadian Embassy…
costaricafinca
ParticipantThere has been more discussion, with someone posting from within Costa Rica, that is returning to the USA, also received a call yesterday from Continental, and was told ”…to contact the US Embassy to get the permit and the information about the broker”.
I do know that, earlier, when one used a service to transport pets, one had to pay ‘duty’ on the imported pet…March 22, 2010 at 4:26 pm in reply to: Costa Rica Health Care – Affordable quality private care. #168982costaricafinca
Participantrosiemaji I stand corrected!
It has indeed been reported that some people have managed to obtain CAJA before being issued a cedula, solely on their folio number, but it is not usually the case, and shouldn’t be counted on.costaricafinca
Participant”It doesn’t matter if the total only is the result of one person’s retirement income or the combination of both of their retirement incomes adds up to $1000 or more”.
This is incorrect.
Only one person pension/SS is applicable, meaning you cannot list/use two different recipients, although you can use two different pensions of the same person.March 21, 2010 at 8:15 pm in reply to: Costa Rica Health Care – Affordable quality private care. #168977costaricafinca
ParticipantYou husband will only be covered if he is a legal resident, as far as I understand, whether or not you are covered by CAJA. I would also expect that he will need to apply under the new requirements when & if he gets his paperwork sorted out, which will require the guaranteed pension/SS of $1000 per month or the $150,000 ‘lump sum’. An expensive way to get residency for you both.

ParticipantYou mean they don’t all offer internet access…
Thanks!costaricafinca
ParticipantI’m sure I posted a reply after the second response…but it disappeared!
We have used this road twice now going from Escazu to near Liberia.
For those we don’t like ‘windy roads’ you may wish to go the old route as it is definitely not the road your passenger will want to read a book, on.
It has cut our drive by more than an hour and my hubby says, it is much more relaxing trip. Plus we pass the entrance to a favourite vivero...:D
I think there will be many sodas and restaurants on the old road, closing, for lack of clients.March 21, 2010 at 12:51 pm in reply to: Costa Rica Health Care – Affordable quality private care. #168972costaricafinca
ParticipantI am glad it worked for your wife.
My husband is having surgery this coming week at Hospital Catolica, after checking around at different facilities and we are praying for a good outcome.
We have been told that for breast cancer, the treatment is quick in contrast to other cancers. And if my husband waited, it could be next year, so we will pay out of pocket and go ahead at this lovely hospital. We also have been told we need to stay around ‘the area’ for a few more days before traveling back to Guanacaste so have reserved rooms at the hotel that is a former convent attached to the hospital. It is like a boutique hotel and includes all meals for both of us.
Hopefully the medical services match the facilities.
For those of you who feel that you shouldn’t pay CAJA, please think again, and hope you never have to use it for a serious medical condition.costaricafinca
ParticipantIt was mentioned that one needs at least a 700 size carrier if your dog is a small dane ???, otherwise the airline will not allow the dog to board.
Check this travel infocostaricafinca
ParticipantGreat danes, have been mentioned in other posts, that they require special large containers. and the cost mentioned was approx. $700
But, since you still haven’t visited this country of ours, aren’t you putting the dog before the cart?
Only a few airlines will fly pets now, and Continental is one.costaricafinca
Participantinslady…you really, and I mean really need to read the rules & reg’s for living here then the recent updates .
Then you will need to search and read a whole new chapter on insurance in Costa Rica.
