We have, as I stated in my previous post!
Last April we flew Continental to Florida. When we went to the airport for our return leg, we were ‘questioned’ by the agent, about returning. After she a lengthy discussion with someone in a back room, we were told, everything was fine.
Four of the 7 of the people stated in this same post above, were legal residents, and had to purchase another ticket.

We had ‘dog treats’ mailed to us, amongst other items and because of multi packages arriving at once, we had to go to Puntarenus to pick them up.
We were ‘warned’ not to bring meat products in again…

I have suggested this many times in forums, and it really is best to ‘be prepared’.
But it is surprising that so many, still doubt or just say that this isn’t necessary.

”…if you do not fertilize or maintain your fruit trees you may not produce fruit year round. However the picking of good species, maintaining your trees and fertilizing them should produce a constant a reliable harvest”
Trees have ‘seasons’, and no matter how you fertilize then, they will not produce just because you want them too!
Yes, you have planted a nice selection, but there are many more species available in Costa Rica.
And since goats are not ‘native’ here, and must be given antibiotics, to keep them healthy, so the milk, cheese are not considered ‘organic’ which may cause you to reconsider what to do with them…
Usually, I love to show what we have done here, including pointing out over…not individually though:D… 16,000 native trees we have added to a ‘reforestation’ project. that we have being doing the past 3 years, plus over 500 fruit trees, but I am not interested in ‘discussing the crash’.
You do have nice properties and I wish you luck.

I promised myself I would respond to this posting, but here I am.
I would like to say with only 2.5 acres of land, plus multiple houses, where is the ‘space’ to grow what you need?
You mention planting all the fruit trees you could think off, so can you tell us, how many and what species?
But, as yet you haven’t planted your organic garden, and so you still have to find out how difficult that is, to do here.
Please realize that there is no way, even with all the fruit trees will they not produce enough for your use all year.
We are on 250 Acres with many hundreds of fruit trees of many different varieties, many already producing, and for most of the time, there is no fruit! Or else, an overabundance and you will be in direction competition of the other local growers.
We have 13 adult goats with three new ‘kids’ this past week, horses and both meat and egg laying chickens. Have you priced animal feed here?
We lived next door to a young American couple, who were doing what you are intending to do, but at least it sounds like you at least decent housing, and both them and their 4 children barely survived with no one to buy their little bit of left over produce.
But, hopefully you are legally working here, and not like our neighbors whose ‘friends’ decided that they were no longer going to financially support this family.
I wish you success.

We have had to purchase return tickets, before gaining residency. And since then, have been ‘questioned’ at the airport. We were on a flight from Florida recently, with Continental, and 7 people were refused permission to board, until they had bought another ticket.
They various airlines are definitely requesting ‘proof of residency’, much more often.
But, how do one know that the airlines are ‘seldom’ fined?

Realize, that your dogs shots/paperwork may also have be updated when you leave Costa Rica every three months. While you may get away without doing this going to Panama or Nicaragua traveling in your own car, I don’t believe you can take a rental car out of Costa Rica. You won’t be allowed to take them on a bus to either country, so will need their paperwork renewed if you take them on by airplane.
You definitely will need this done prior to returning to the USA.

Lots of people have done it, and some have regretted it.
The dangers have really increased.
You can register your vehicle but still have to pay stiff duties, have it inspected, etc. unless you intend to return with it, to the USA after three months

Scott, we did check out Panama prior to moving here, and it is a nice country but it’s not for us!

Of course, a very small percentage of the Canadians moving here will join this club, and I didn’t say they did. I simply stated, ’Over 50% of the members of the Canadian Club of Costa Rica that were here when we joined nearly 9 years ago, have returned to Canada and some other have gone to Panama’.
And whether it is 50% of 100 members or 50% of 500 members, it is still 50%
And do you think I would tell you and everyone else, ‘Who, by name, are those who’ve left?
And that was a ‘cheap shot’,saying “Maybe it attracts the homesick disproportionately”.

Rising crime is one of the main concerns. More are looking to live in gated communities which are more expensive.
Plus, many people have lost money, there is no denying this fact.
My personal opinion is that many, after enjoying ‘living in the tropics’ for a few years, return because they miss their families. And as mentioned in the prior post, for cheaper Canadian health care if they have ongoing health concerns.
Some ex-pats, not solely Canadians, left because the reality never matched the dreams…
And of course, there are those who ‘need’ the organized lifestyle they had chosen to leave behind, not realizing that Costa Rica is very much a ’hurry up and wait' country. Lots of us here, enjoy the slower pace, but not everyone can accept this.
I read on a forum the other day when someone asked ‘what programs were in place for seniors, here’? Well, none, specifically are aimed at seniors.
The cost of living here has risen dramatically from a few years ago, but this is true to everywhere in the world.
Not ‘liking Costa Rica’ doesn’t really come into it, as most that I have known and that have left, which is many over the past 9 years, ‘like’ the country, but they also liked where the came from originally, as well.
Emil, it is hard to explain to someone who has ‘read the books' and possibly never traveled or lived in a developing country.
Over 50% of the members of the Canadian Club of Costa Rica that were here when we joined nearly 9 years ago, have returned to Canada and some other have gone to Panama.
This is not a guess….this is a fact!

David, I probably am wrong, but 40% is still pretty high, don’t you think? But, I am hearing of more and more selling their homes at heavily discounted price to return to their ‘home’ base, mostly Americans, and Canadians but also Europeans.
And I fully agree with your comment, “…that finding acceptable rental properties, especially if one follows the common advice to live in several places before making a commitment, can be a daunting task. Aspiring expats need to be alerted to this fact”.

It will depend on the age/year of your vehicle.
If it was built with a cadilidic converter, and has now been removed for some reason, it must have one in place to pass inspections here.
