One thing is that here the growing period is year round, so weeds don’t ’die off’, like during a Canadian winter. Farmers in Canada need to eradicate weeds in their fields as well. 😆
We have pampered horses, goats, chickens and turkeys!
The weather you have been seeing on the Caribbean is ‘usual’ and a problem that often accompanies it, is that the road closes…and there only is one road!

Next time I try to help and advise someone, I will just lie, and not try to explain that the whole country isn’t totally flooded with pesticides.

The more rain, the more the weeds grow, the more locals have to try and slow the growth…and if they didn’t you would see more accidents due to being unable to see as one is driving along the roadside.
When one says ‘rampant use’ of sprays, someone else may think this is totally acceptable or even normal. And of course some people will use them than others. As one who lives on a very large property we do use Round up, to control weeds. That being said, it is not sprayed all over the farm….
Obviously, if you live ‘in town’ there will be less weeds at the side of the road to control. We have ‘stuff’ that grows over the height of a person in just a couple of months during the rainy season, and it is impossible to weed by hand and if cut with a ‘weed whacker’ or machete it grows even ‘better’.
When you think about the huge amount of trees, flowers that originated and flourish here, it is due to the moisture in the soil and the sun. Unfortunately mother nature treats them all equally, not choosing which ones should grow well and which shouldn’t. On many properties, owners keep a cow, goats or horses to feed & weed their land. As do we in certain areas….
Presently over on the Caribbean side many areas have flooded over the past few day due to extensive rain.

If it is ‘factory issued’ it is OK. If it is the ‘applied’ product it is not acceptable. Although, we have the medium coloured ‘applied’ product on ours and it has gone through RITIVE many times with no problems, but definitely not on your front window!
Some just take it off, then immediately go and get it redone…

Who agrees on the altitude? Not everyone 😆
It depends on what you are looking for. If the hot weather is what you want, a high altitude will not be good for you. Cool or even cold at night, then this is fine.
We are only at 800 Mts. and it is hot during the day and at night it is fine for us, but definitely not cold. Where we lived before we were at a similar altitude, but it was much cooler….
To hire a driver for 3-6 months will be expensive, but obviously you wouldn’t need him every day :o. I have read recommendations for Private driver but please note, I have never used his services but he has been highly recommended by many although it depends on where you will be based.
I can understand you wanting to share your trip with your ‘best friend’ but there are thousands, possibly millions of healthy dogs here, so the chances of ‘something’ happening to yours, is pretty unlikely.

The dog came up behind a worker while he was cutting down banana leaves, and the worker was just devastated with what happened. You can only see a very fine line now.
Luckily ours ignore the sapos that share the bodega with them.

Our dogs love to ’go to work' and whilst ’there' they run through long grass.
We do use Frontline and other meds. the vets around here recommend.
Our dogs have had Bott flies, ticks…as have both of us…big cats bites, wasp bites after stealing honey from a hive, porcupines quills, intentional poisoning, snake bites…
I don’t know what a ‘hot spot’ is, but maybe they have had that as well 😳
New pup, just last week…

This one survived a accidental swipe of a machete

The expansion project is currently going ahead, as we pass it often, and there is lots of equipment at work. I also wondered what jdocop meant by his statement

We check our dogs every day for ticks, and on one in particular, we very often find at least one. On another dog, we have found one ‘in her nostril’ 😥 many times
And, as I mentioned on a prior post, check every dog, regularly and very carefully, for ‘Bott flies’.

No recycling program in effect where we live in Guanacaste. And, when in Liberia on a Friday, market & garbage pick-up day, there are no signs of any recycling boxes, separated bags, etc.

What jckincy is more or less what I posted a while ago, that “…because the wife misses the kids, grandkids, family, etc. For many of these people they thought moving south to warmer weather and golf year around would be great but the culture shock and missing the “old country” is too much”. And personally I think this is the main reason they leave.
With the price of the Florida condoS, etc, it is much easier & cheaper to purchase property there, since as low as the price may be, financing is available and they don’t have to ‘secure their funds’ as they do here for residency purposes.
Of course, this is comparing apples to oranges.
And some just miss the change in seasons.

I realized Scott that I didn’t answer all of your question, although I did reply to a similar question from maravilla”For one of the couples it was a ‘financial decision’ after 5 years of living here and the others was ‘life was not what they envisioned’ so after a year and a half they are going home”. And I know both of these couples, not just ’heard it through the grapevine…’
One of the ‘husbands’ participated in a couple of ‘discussion sites’ but not this one.

DavidCMurray I couldn’t believe it when I read your response to mariner, that read ”Better you should stay in Canada where where the worst that can happen is that they decapitate you for using public transportation”. Compared to the some of the crimes committed in the USA, Canada seems pretty docile. That comment was totally uncalled for. It was a horrific thing to happen, and it shouldn’t have happened to anyone. I am writing this, as a forum member and as a Canadian.
mariner, while I am sure ’she will have fun doing those things' it may limit what you can do.

Give the guy a break! He may have booked into the Zima….
In response to editers statement “Your comments seem to be more interested in bad-mouthing Victor Guerrera than in finding a place to stay” would you, editer, recommend anyone whether in CR or the USA who didn’t keep an appointment and then failed to respond to both messages and phone calls?
The ideas of these forums is to tell others of experiences, both ‘positive’ and the ‘not so positive’.
