In an effort to stop criminals from making false
license plates, the Costa Rican government
requires all cars to replace the old license
plates with the new, more ‘secure’ plates….

If you are car owner in Costa Rica and have not
looked into how the new, mandatory license plate
change affects you, it’s time to get serious
because the first sets of plates (placas) which
end with the number 1 must be replaced before
the end of October 2013….

You can start the process at your local Post Office
(Correos de Costa Rica), at the National Registry
(www.rnpdigital.com) or, at any branch of Banco de
Costa Rica (BCR).

If you understand Spanish and prefer to order
online, you can do that on the BCR website here.

This is being done in phases over the next two
years so take a look at the chart in my short
article and you’ll see when your license plate
must be replaced ….
