Like living anywhere in the world, it is easy to get stuck in a routine.  So when my family and I were invited last minute for a weekend getaway in Punta Leona, we jumped at the opportunity.

Punta Leona is an exclusive community that borders a 750 acre nature conservancy, located an hour west of San Jose and just 15 minutes north of Jaco. The conservancy was created almost 30 years ago and serves as an important centre for the study of local animals and birds.

As a result, the place is teeming with wildlife such as white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, pizotes (aka Coates), iguanas, sloths and many other animals that most of us from North America only see in zoos.  We had a lot of fun checking out and taking pictures with a 400 year old Ceiba tree.

You will find a long list of options for accommodation including hotels and vacation rentals ranging from modest to down right palatial. There are a few nice restaurants located inside the community.

I highly recommend breakfast in Punta Leona as you can experience the natural beauty while enjoying a great meal.  Our favourite beach inside Punta Leona is Playa Blanca.  As it’s name indicates, it has beautiful white sand and a lovely little wave.

It also is family friendly with all the amenities one could ask for if being stranded for hours by a surfing dad.  If bigger waves are you thing, Playa Hermosa is a black sand beach just a short drive south.

There are many activities on hand such as hiking, swimming, fishing, snorkelling, put put, workout equipment, birdwatching and a load of tours offered but if just finding a quiet spot to yourself on the beach is your thing, you will not be disappointed.

We all had a great time and will be back soon.  If you ever get a chance to go, don’t pass it up and bring a camera!!!

Most pictures taken by Marcela Goodell of Beach Life Photography (the good ones anyways.)
