For most people living in Costa Rica, it is actually quite ‘rare’ when they come across anything ‘dangerous’ in their everyday lives or one of Mother Nature’s more ‘exotic’ creations.

I woke up with one of those ‘exotic’ creatures one morning.

She was beautiful, petite but with long legs, quite furry with very short light brown hair and was fast asleep, clinging to my bedroom wall.

Rushing into the kitchen, I grabbed a container to try and gently remove her from the wall. She was very sleepy indeed and it was easy to put her into the container, carry her into the living room where she then sat on the window sill to wake up a little.

As she woke, her little heart was beating like crazy and she was obviously scared. I thanked her for visiting and asked her if I could take some photographs to remember her by before she left me forever… She gave me her approval and then she flew off into the sunrise…

So go ahead! Joke if you wish! Sometimes I do wake up and find that I have spent the night with an ‘exotic’ creature in my home.

Jee! Jee!

Little Mastiff bat

Our thanks to Robin Rice who helped us identify this beauty as a member of the free-tailed bat family.

All the members of this family have the distinctive mouse-like tail extending beyond the tail membrane. They are insectivorous, specializing in catching insects in flight (as opposed to scooping them up from leaves or the ground.)

This is probably the ‘Little Mastiff bat’ or ‘molossus molossus.’ and they typically live in the lowlands, although as a result of climate change, they are more and more often being found at higher elevations…
