Two Americans Dead In Two Weeks Crossing Rivers in Costa Rica

For the second time in two weeks another American citizen has tragically died trying to cross a swollen river in his car.

On 2nd September 2010, 48 year old Kai Allen Desmont died while trying to cross a swollen stream in his car in San Francisco de Coto Brus.

Then again on Sunday the 14th September 2010, 63 year old Gordon Ray Smith died in Tres Ríos de Coronado in Osa, Puntarenas. Mr. Smith’s car was found 400M away from where he tried to cross, his body was found 100 meters away and the body of his 19 year old stepson – who had tried to rescue his stepfather – was discovered six kilometers away at Playa Garza de Me Punta Mala the next day.

Anybody who has lived in Costa Rica for a few ‘green seasons’ will confirm that we do have torrential rains at times in Costa Rica.

Some areas get more rain than others and what looks like a delicate little mountain stream at Christmas time can turn into an angry, raging river six feet deep with an incredibly strong and deadly current during the rainy season.
