Before I get into it, lets start off with a game of Jeopardy:

“Infidelity, Alcohol & The Run Away”… Name the top three personal issues that will ruin you or your family when moving to Costa Rica.

Isn’t this a Life Style Blog? Yes, exactly! Lets dig into to real life stuff as it is a good idea to consider any challenges you may have in your personal life because once you arrive, all those personality “quirks” of yours will be magnified by 100.

The Run Away – Just like the New Yorker that says, “So how You doin’?” This is more like “So, what are you doing… here?” Really, what brought you here? And why?

I can think of many songs that would fit here perfectly, but… nah. Only you know why you came to the tropics. Lets name some:

To leave a problem from home Cannot get a good career up there and think its better here Girlfriend / boyfriend left you — seeking change Need to escape family Different politics Need freedom…

I’ve seen and heard it. So has my wife. This is not a place to escape too because whatever you are running from will eventually find you.

The Social Drinker — Nor Cal Micro Brews are the bomb! And I love Napa Cabernets just like the next guy but if you have a problem with not knowing when to stop, this may not be the place for you.

Listen, I have seen it for eleven years and the writing is on the wall. Cold Beer is just dang good! This is the Tropics after all and nothing better than kicking up my feet on my chaise and tossing one (or three) back.

It is hot, humid and a nice cold one just makes you feel good and then a glass or two of red wine because it goes great with Ahi Tuna. Add the, always a reason to have a party component and you have a recipe for disaster.

If you are one of those that enjoy a few up there, you will enjoy more while living in Costa Ballena. Just be careful because at best you may look at the scale and watch the alcohol calories grow on your waist or worse, turn you from a social drinker into one with a problem.

The Romeo — Do you have a wandering eye? Or even worse, you can’t keep it zipped up? If you answered yes and you are in a relationship, you may want to arrive solo before you lose your shirt in a bitter break up OR, keep your values in check.

Just to give you an idea, the city of San Isidro de General, Perez Zeledon, is famous for its 7:1 ratio of women to men. Then you take into account the beautiful beaches and all the beautiful people = tempting.

I know you are freezing somewhere in Chicago (or any other place that is cold and damp) right now thinking how to get your family out of this winter season. You’ve been to Costa Rica, your marriage is good, kids are healthy and things are fine. But you have this tendency to dream of paradise and bikinis. After all, what’s wrong with that? Nothing.

Just remember what is most important in your life.

If any or all of these sound familiar, own it now as they will come with you to Costa Rica and grow faster than mold in the rainy season. They will follow and haunt you and sooner than you think, will define you.

So come here with good intentions. Come with a purpose. Come to achieve something or build something. Come without all your “baggage” because we don’t want it. Come here healthy with realistic expectations and you will you will attract other positives and enjoy the Pura Vida.
