Earlier this week, a female real estate agent with her small pet dog arrived with the building manager to look at the apartment for rent located beside mine.

It is a beautiful, luxury apartment with great views and I am naturally interested in seeing what kind of neighbours will move in…

Will they have small dogs that bark? Will they have screaming little children that banging around all day long? Or maybe it will be a polite young man who likes to practice playing drums at midnight!

We will see! Vamos a ver!

But you could tell someone was outside because of the gentle, friendly bark of a small dog in the hallway. Not a threatening bark but one that said; “You don’t need to leave me here alone you know, I can behave myself inside…”

So I went out to be greeted by a beautiful, little blonde haired dog whom we later discovered was ‘Lady.’ And very ladylike she was too….

She was a very affectionate animal and we played for a little while and in doing so, I discovered a couple of ticks (In Spanish – garrapatas) on her and came back into my apartment to grab my tweezers…

As I walked back into the hallway, the two women also came out of the neigbours’ apartment, looked at me with tweezers in hand and greeted me. The dog came to me rather than to the owner and she appeared puzzled as she looked at me…

I explained that I had promised ‘Lady’ that I would remove the ticks from her and the owner immediately became quite indignant saying; “Mi perra no tiene garrapatas.” – Or… “My dog doesn’t have ticks!”

I am known for being very direct and rarely politically correct but must admit that my conduct was quite gentlemanly (In Spanish – ‘caballeroso’) and stated politely that we would show her and continued as ‘Lady’ laid down for me and we did indeed remove one very large, bloated tick from around her neck and another smaller one from the base of her tail.

Of course now the owner is all sweetness and apologetic; “Que vergüenza” she said… (How embarrassing!)

Because we know that when you look really, really closely at something, whether it be dogs or humans, companies or countries, we all have our little ticks and imperfections, right!

But ‘Lady’ was now very happy that she was now tick-free… For the time being anyway!
