There is an interesting dynamic which began occurring with the development boom during the 2000-2008 time frame but continues here in Costa Rica which I find incredibly interesting.

International chains and the growing number of franchises are installing themselves in the Costa Rica marketplace.

The arrivals of international chains evoke both applause, ecstasy and disgust and I for one, enjoy watching the push and pull of a world economy in a place like Costa Rica which is seeking the balance of the protection of its essence as a country and the demand for many of the international “wonders.”

The latest and perhaps most emblematic chain in recent years to announce the aperture of operations here is Starbucks. The irony is thicker than with most chains as Starbucks has long been a big buyer of Costa Rican coffee and several years ago during a coffee pricing mini crisis, played a major role in normalizing demand and supporting the local production by upping their purchase of the magical bean.

Their recent announcement of the opening of their first store here has been met with posts, blogs and tweets from some Americans that they are picking up and moving, while others are clamoring for the first place in line for the scones and double lattes.

The purpose of this email is not to damnify nor extol the virtues of these new chains here in Costa Rica, but to take a moment to comment on how it can effect each of you and us, living and visiting this paradise.

The news, in my opinion is very positive, while not immune from globalization and the chains which have proven successful around the globe, Costa Rica is far from a “prefab, mcmansion, cookie cutter” destination and for those who see the aperture of Subway, WalMart, and Starbucks as the death of civilization as we know it, there are still many areas of Costa Rica where the essence of life void of the corporate world can and is fully embraced.

For those, who revel in the ability to explore a foreign land, stunning beauty and still nail down your favorite frozen coffee, get your “not so $5 dollar footlong, and never give up one of the conveniences of life in the USA, Canada or other European destination.. Costa Rica is also incredibly unique.
