Since August 2015 when I had my ultra-super-hyperactive thyroids treated with radioactive iodine I have been diligent in swimming nearly every morning in our pool in Santa Ana, Costa Rica.

Distance swimming or running bore me to tears so I prefer ‘high-intensity’ swim training with lots of sprints.

It’s great to see and feel progress and after three months I have certainly lost weight around my waist, my strength and speed have increased significantly and my lung capacity has definitely improved.

To be honest I’m a little frustrated with my 50m time because I swim 25m in 12 seconds which means the turn at the end of the pool and the second length is obviously taking 16 seconds which is significantly longer but it’s a good start for this 55 year old expat enjoying life more than ever in Santa Ana, Costa Rica.

Next week I will try and find out the process of joining a swim club in San José which has a 50m pool!

PS. To qualify for the Men’s 50m freestyle in the 2016 Olympics (Yeah! Right! 🙂 I have to get my time down to 22.27
