Okay, it cost less then what? or how much is less? One of the things I always dreamed of being able to do was to go into a store and purchase a dress without looking at the ticket first.

Just the ability to purchase something without making cost the basis for my financial decision. Never did I believe that trying to decide where I would spend the best years of my life would be based on how much it cost.

I’ve always dreamed of the freedom of looking at a map and putting my finger on a name then saying that is it. That is where I want to live, if not for the rest of my life but for some of my life.

My big dream was to be able to select a location by climate. Since my childhood was spent in Omaha, Nebraska, I’m not crazy about cold chilly nights and sitting by the fireplace. What I’ve always wanted to do was live somewhere I did not have to change from winter clothing to summer clothing.

Never thinking that after all the years of working my selection of where I would possibly spend my golden years would depend mostly on cost.

After many years of moving because of a job or because of better schools or because of more opportunities. I thought the day would come where we could just get up one day and as I said point to a location on the map and check it out. Never thinking in checking it out instead of moving where I can be close to a job, now I’m moving to be close to my Doctor, hospital or where it is cheap.

Let me tell you, when we came to Costa Rica we had read all these books about the country and all of them said how cheap it was. Well, when we got here it was not as cheap as they said it was. In fact the books mentioned more about the cheap aspects of living here rather than describing climate, food, customs, people.

Costa Rica is not an island and most people think of it as if it is. They do not know that Costa Rica has mountains as well as beaches. The climate in Costa Rica is worth mentioning far more than talking about the cost of living. You see the cost of living changes more rapidly than climate.

We have some people living here that came here thinking about how cheap it was, and they are now discouraged because it is not as cheap as they thought it was.

Let me just tell you that Costa Rica is cheaper, there are a lot of things here I can have custom made for less then what I would pay for a manufactured fake in the USA. Then there are some things that are more expensive, hair shampoo for one, face cream and hair color, real important things for most women.

There was one couple who came here about 5 years ago, who were so busy looking for that cheaper place until they have moved from Nicaragua, to Costa Rica, to Panama and back to Costa Rica. My heart goes out to people that think paying less means contentment, sometimes they are very disappointed.

Costa Rica is a great country full of exciting adventure, wonderful people, great climates and yes some things are cheaper. From Costa Rica you have access to all of Central America, the government is really the most peaceful.

Costa Rica is the safest country in Central America, so come to Costa Rica and look for all the benefits, there are a lot of them.

Come with a spirit of adventure and an open mind to other customs and culture. Meet new people and experience new relationships. We have a community here in Grecia that is just full of wonderful people. You can not believe how helpful everyone is within our community of foreigners as well as the community of Costa Ricans who have embraced us.

Put down the National Geographic and come on down to Costa Rica, bring the money you have and just check to see how far it will go. The only thing about getting old is you get more afraid of taking a chance.

It seems this is the time we would say “the sky is the limit”, some of us my live to be a hundred but not a lot of us. If you have gotten your senior card from AARP it is time to analyze where you want to spend the second, best half of your life.
