If you happen to be in Grecia for a few days, this natural rock bridge is a quick and easy stop nearby. Puente de Piedra lies fifteen minutes by bus outside of town. This visit may only rob an hour from your day, but it will add a lovely sight to your experience.

Rumor has it that this bridge was built by El Diablo. A farmer wagered his soul for a bridge, on the terms that the devil had to finish it before the rooster crowed the next morning.

While the devil thought this an easy deal, he was fooled when the farmer pulled the cock’s tail and made him crow just before the last stone was placed.

This story provides a little game of “who can find the hole of the last stone.” I was pretty sure the hole was a sizable missing chuck on the right, but my husband thought it was somewhere else, which required crossing the river to see. What do you think? My guess vs. his:

To get there, simply take the bus from the Grecia bus station with the name “Puente de Piedra.” It costs about $1 each way. If you mention to the driver that you want to see el puente, he will tell you where to get off.

From the bus stop, you cross the road and walk down the gravel road on the left, parallel to the bridge ahead. There is a very short trail to the bridge, but it is slippery–be sure to wear shoes with tread.

We spent about thirty minutes at the bridge. It is a pretty place, suitable for a short picnic. We enjoyed having the place all to ourselves.

We snapped pics and watched the many swallows that swooped back and forth under the bridge, sometimes stopping at a nest tucked away in the rocks.

Even though the river collects into what looks like a good swimming hole beneath the bridge, I wouldn’t recommend it–too muddy for two-leggers. Bring your dogs, they would love it!

There is no charge to see the rock bridge, so it only costs you a little bus fare and time. If you are going in the rainy season, head out in the morning before it pours.

We caught the bus from Grecia at 12:00, and it picked us back up from Puente de Piedra at 12:52.

It was supposed to arrive back at 40 minutes past the hour, so don’t worry if you think you’ve missed it. It is a short and sweet visit, worth it to check it out while you’re in Grecia.

We would continue to feed our huger for traveling, participate in outdoor explorations, and maintain our individual hobbies and lifestyle with the babies in tow, or more likely, in the carrier.”
