If you are hoping to buy or build a home in Costa Rica, paying attention to how the water is managed in your area is extremely important.

The team at Tierra Pacifica in Junquillal, Costa Rica have planned and are presently developing a terrific little environmentally friendly community with 17 homes already completed (including the home of the developer) and the first phase of their condos are 90% finished.

A short video with Matt Rosensteele in Costa Rica.

There is something for everyone at Tierra Pacifica with affordable condos for sale from about $150K and you can easily walk to two beautiful beaches plus there are lots for sale should you wish to have your own home built by a proven U.S. builder and, if making money is your goal, you might want to consider buying one of their spaces in the Tierra Pacifica Commercial Center.

“My name is Matt Rosensteele and I’m the Executive Director of Restoring Our Watershed, our watershed being the Nandamojo River Valley on the Pacific Coast of Guanacaste.

Costa Rica’s Blue Flag Program was established by the national government as a way to first of all incentivize the protection of water resources and second, distinguish different places in the country that were doing a good job of this.

So communities, beaches, watersheds and different places that have won the Blue Flag have higher property values because they can attract more visitors who may be logging on to Costa Rican tourism websites in order to see which areas are doing an effective job of protecting their water. We won a Blue Flag for the first time last year after organizing a committee of local residents to take action to protect the watershed.

This year we will be able to give three new Bees for Trees loans which will mean that we will plant about 3000 trees and also reforest about six hectares in the watershed. We were able to do so because we launched a fundraiser on the internet and which donors could give as little as $25 and we volunteered to send them a free bottle of honey in exchange for any donation.

Through that campaign we were able to get 90 different people both from the Nandamojo Watershed and also around Costa Rica and some people in the United States to contribute so they will be able to not only give loans this year but as our beekeepers repay their loan through honey production, we will be able to continue to use that capital to generate more sustainable economic activity in our area.

The opportunity to become Restoring Our Watershed’s Executive Director was incredible because it enabled my wife and I to move from the United States to Costa Rica and really start a different lifestyle than the one we had going in the US.

For example, I was working at a bank and my wife was working in an internet company in the US and down here, aside from working for Restoring Our Watershed, we spend a lot of time taking care of the very small farm that we’ve been developing. We’ve got our own chickens, ducks, goats, most of the organic vegetables that we need to survive and being able to spend time outdoors and working the earth and sort of having more sustainable lifestyle has just been a thrilling change for us and it’s one that will radically change our lives.

If you want to find out more about how we’re working to restore the Nandamojo Watershed, please visit www.OurWatershed.org. That’s O-U-R watershed dot org. If you’re able to make a donation, we’re able to plant a tree in this beautiful valley for just $1 a piece, so any little bit would be a huge help.”
