Horse riding is a favorite past time in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. This is in large part due to the lush landscapes which surround the area. Rainforests and volcanoes give horse lovers plenty of exciting areas to explore where vehicles have no hope of getting into. After all, horses are the ultimate all-terrain vehicle.

The wet season plays havoc on the Costa Rican roads so horses play a vital role around Tamarindo. In fact it’s not uncommon to see horses being ridden even in the built up areas. It is perhaps because of this reliance on horses as a mode of transport that they are much cheaper to purchase and look after than they are in North America.

Even if you aren’t able to keep a horse on your own land there are plenty of stables around that will board your horse which are extremely affordable. For $50 — 100 a month your horse will be provided food and a stable. It’s also possible to purchase a decent horse for about $400 USD but as is usual for horse buying the pure breeds can still have a higher asking price.

The horses of Costa Rica and Tamarindo are celebrated in a horse parade referred to as a “tope.” Riders get to perform on their beautiful equines by showing off both their riding skills and their horse’s intricate steps; usually while donned in fancy cowboy costumes. This traditional event originally started as a horse-race and bullfighting event.

There’s plenty of places around Tamarindo to enjoy some quality time with your horse. Beach riding is an especially rewarding experience — particularly when you get to enjoy the spectacular sunsets. Riding through the extensive forests around the area is likewise enjoyable as you get up close and personal with the native wildlife. Monkeys and birds can be spied everywhere but if you are lucky you will also come across deer and puma sharing the natural habitat with you.

Horseback riding in Tamarindo gives riders the opportunity to explore the local surrounds that is inaccessible by any other means. Horses are affordable, as is keeping them stabled and fed. If you’re looking for a more permanent change of pace in Tamarindo then you should definitely consider making horses a part your new life.
