Costa Rica is well known for its mountain biking. The opportunity to ride on a variety of terrain types with backdrops of ocean, mountains, volcanoes, or rainforest is a truly unique opportunity.

The Sierpe River Valley in the Osa Peninsula is home to great mountain biking that is both enjoyable and easily accessible for all skill levels.

A route that is very popular with mountain biking groups from San Jose is the road from the village of Sierpe to Drake Bay. This excursion is best commenced with a breakfast of gallo pinto and coffee at one of Sierpe’s quaint riverfront cafes.

After breakfast the journey will begin with you and your bikes being transported across the river in either a row boat, or on a barge if you are with a large group. This is a very authentic experience and fits in well with the rustic feel and unique culture of the Osa Peninsula.

Once riding on the road to Drake you will immediately be surrounded by lush rainforest. The road itself is in very good condition and makes for an easy ride. After a few kilometers of climbing you’ll find yourself in the small pueblo of Miramar.

From Miramar there are incredible views of the Pacific Ocean, Sierpe River, Diquis valley, Cano Island, and the Costanera mountains. Miramar also has a pulperia (small grocery store) that sells snacks and refreshments to re-energize oneself for the remainder of the ride.

From Miramar there are several options on which you can continue your ride. A favorite amongst Sierpe del Pacifico residents is a one kilometer “single-track” ride down to a large series of waterfalls and natural swimming pools.

This is a great place to cool off, take a swim, and relax. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous this is also a great place to look for colorful species of poison dart frogs.

Another option for those wanting a longer ride or multi-day experience is to take your bikes all the down to Drake Bay proper. Spending a night at one of the many eco-lodges before returning the following day is an active and adventurous way to spend a weekend. An additional multi-day option is to take the fork to Rincon and then carry on to Puerto Jimenez, Cabo Matapalo, or Karate.

Wherever you choose to go, mountain biking is a great way to explore and enjoy the Osa Peninsula.
