In April Marina Pez Vela, Quepos, Costa Rica hosted the 2013 Offshore Sportfishing World Championship. From the 14th to 19th of April, the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica was buzzing with Sport fishing fever.

With over 200 entrants forming a total of 68 teams from across the globe, this was a highly anticipated event in the world Sport fishing calendar and Quepos did not disappoint.

With plentiful stocks of sailfish, tuna, mahi mahi, roosterfish, grouper, cubera, wahoo and more – it is clear why Quepos continues to be the preferred destination for sport fishing enthusiasts.

Opening its doors in 2010, the Marina Pez Vela is yet another jewel in the crown of the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

This Marina provides wet slips for rent as well as a variety of services and amenities including fuel dock, fishing charters, clearing services and dry stock storage.

The Marinaís docking system can accommodate vessels up to 200 feet with a safe operating depth of 14 feet. Other amenities include electric, potable water, dock box and complementary Wi-Fi.

It is worth mentioning that Marina Pez Vela is the only full service Marina in Costa Rica.

With several international sports fishing championships scheduled throughout the year Quepos has transformed from a quiet fishing village to a vibrant town that is a thriving eco-tourism, sport fishing and destination wedding location.

Allan Flores, Minister of Tourism for Costa Rica is quick to point out that Quepos has become a preferred destination for sport fishing enthusiasts thanks to the countries sustainable angling policies that seek to ensure the preservation of a variety or marine species.

Flores also states that these types of sport fishing events attract a particular type of tourist whose economic contributions have a significant impact on local businesses.

Tourism statistics released by the I.C.T Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (Costa Rican Institute of Tourism) demonstrate the popularity of Costa Rica as a sport fishing destination.

According to a 2011 survey by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, nearly 75,000 visitors that year arrived for the sole purpose of casting a line in the Pacific and Atlantic waters.

The fact that the country is home to over 100 world-record catches is but further confirmation that this is a top sport fishing destination.

Itís also worth pointing out that the nearby Manuel Antonio National Park – a mecca for adventure and eco-tourism has once again been recognized as the best beach in Central America according to the Travellers Choice 2013 ranking from Trip Advisor.

Quepos and Manuel Antonio will continue to reign supreme when it comes to attracting the highest numbers of tourists compared to any other region of Costa Rica.
