Your security can be threatened by people who steal the code for opening your gate or garage door.

To avoid this there are now new kinds of gate/garage door security devices. One has codes that change every time they are used. It may be more expensive to install this, but the security it provides is worth it.

Some doors also come with battery-run motors that can be used when the electricity goes out. There are also gates that close automatically and others with infra-red sensors that keep the gate from closing when something or someone is in the way.

For even greater security, a device inside the house can be activated by the last person home, which blocks the gate electronically.

Another motor responds to a telephone call after a code has been entered. All these systems can be adapted to any motors currently available in the country.

Other innovations include gates that open and close faster and with less resistance. In addition cables can be replaced with chains which are harder to cut.

Galvanized steel and iron gates are still the most popular styles, although wooden gates, which look prettier, are also available.

  • Sliding: the most popular, don’t need to be attached to a ceiling.
  • Lightweight, rigid: This lifts up in one piece. Ideal for garages.
  • Doubling: This kind folds up.
