Residents of the Samara/Carrillo area came together once again in a community fundraising effort, this time to provide resources for new playground equipment for the area’s children.

The event was centered on a “Bachelor & Bachelorette Auction & Dinner” held Saturday night, 17-May at Coco’s Mexican Restaurant in Samara, and was underwritten by Mareas International Home School, Intercultura Language School, TEFL, Del Sol Magazine and Amy Taylor, with tireless organization by Lennina Araya and Katie Steele.

In addition to the live bidding for dates with several of our areas most fun, most popular, and most attractive Bachelors and Bachelorettes, there was a silent auction on dozens of items donated by area businesses including meals at several of the area’s better restaurants, reservations for 1-2 nights in local hotels, beautiful jewelry made by local artisans, local artwork, kayak, surf & paddleboard excursions, language lessons, canopy tours, catered dinners, and more.

The 90-place seated dinner was sold out well in advance, but that did not deter dozens more from showing up to observe and participate in the fun-filled evening. The standing room only crowd included local and expat residents representing all ages and nationalities, and it was great to see everyone participate in one of the most enjoyable evenings in recent Samara history.

The live auction (and it did indeed get quite “lively”) was preceded by a wonderful dinner prepared and served by the great staff at Coco’s, and some very enjoyable dinner music by local musicians. After the auction the music started again for those that wanted to stay and dance.

As anticipated, the live auction (6 Bachelors and 6 Bachelorettes) was the highlight of the evening. About halfway through the presentation and live bidding on the Bachelors and Bachelorettes, there was a necessary 20 minute intermission to allow everyone time to catch their breath, refill their glasses and prepare their strategy for the remainder of the bidding.

The “date” with the Bachelor or Bachelorette included not only dinner for 2 at a local restaurant or catered to a romantic setting on the beach, but other activities like a guided quad tour, stand-up paddleboard tour, zip lining, horseback riding, etc.

To say that the bidding was competitive and spirited would be a gross understatement ……. granted, all of the auction winners came from our younger set of residents, but some of we older folks got involved in the fun as well, if only to keep the bids going up in an effort to help raise more money for the playground!

Everyone left with the feeling that the auction was a very successful and enjoyable evening that is sure to become an annual event.

More importantly, everyone also left knowing that in addition to the live and silent auction winners, the real winners of this great event will ultimately be the local and visiting kids of Samara enjoying their new playground equipment!
