I have a confession… I am coming out of the CLOS’et.

That’s right, since moving to Costa Rica I drink a cheap box-wine called Clos.

There are many other choices when it comes to buying wine in Costa Rica, most of which come in an actual bottle, so let me explain how I got here.

Clos but no Cigar!

Before we moved to Costa Rica, my wife and I both had demanding jobs and a stress filled life, but along with the stress came a nice disposable income. We by-passed the whole kid rearing thing so there was never a worry about going out, coming home late, or having to find a sitter.

We were DINK’s — Dual Income No Kids. We ate well and drank well – OK that might confuse you — we did not drink well, we drank top shelf. The wine we chose for dinner almost always came in a bottle and if not it came in a wineglass, or two. When we moved to Costa Rica we gave up that life of stress, worry and in the process, incredible food, great wine and yes, a nice cigar from time to time.

Now we have a fixed income.. no, that’s wrong. We have a fixed amount of money and our old ways have to cease to give the new way a chance to survive. What is one to do?

Luckily, when we got here to Costa Rica a friend, clothed in a trench coat said, “Psst — want some wine?” Of course, came our reply and we were introduced to Clos — a Chilean Box Wine.

It’s not Good Wine but It’s Clos!

So yes, I am a cheap, box-wine drinker. Clos costs about 2,300 Colones for a liter on sale or just over $5 for a LITER.

Reminds me of high school days and $2 bottles of Boones Farm, Strawberry Hill — sorry mom!

For that small sum, the wine even comes in more flavors than just Blanco and Rojo; there are a couple of flavors for you red drinkers and a couple for the white. The crazy thing is — in all honesty; it is a very drinkable, everyday table wine.

In Clos’ing,

So there, I said it. You now know my deepest, darkest secret.

Here is a tip though — if you find yourself enjoying Clos Chilean Box-Wine, don’t get Two Clos, get as many as you can as, like many products in Costa Rica, you never know when your favorite will be stocked again.
