On Sunday, 22nd August 2010 we had the usual huge number of major corporations in Costa Rica advertising for employees and one advertisement in particular caught my eye.

Amway is advertising “Great Careers Happen Here” which made me chuckle because it was not so long ago that these great careers were enjoyed by US citizens in the USA.

Amway Michigan Layoffs To Begin In 2nd Quarter of 2010. The news, which the Press said it obtained from a confidential memo distributed to employees earlier this month, deals a blow to West Michigan’s job market as well as to Amway’s carefully managed public image. It comes after the privately owned company celebrated its 50th anniversary and reported record sales of $8.2 billion for 2008….

Amway Corp. announced sweeping job cuts, part of a major restructuring to compete in the faceless world of the Internet. The direct-sales giant said it will cut nearly 11% of its global work force, or 1,300 jobs, including an undisclosed number of positions at its Nutrilite division in Buena Park. Amway said about 900 jobs will be cut at its world headquarters in Ada, MI. A total of 260 jobs will be cut overseas with the remainder of the cuts coming from Amway’s California Nutrilite Operations in Buena Park and Lakeview, which together have 750 employees. The cuts, which will take place over the next 15 months, will involve mostly management and salaried employees.
