This may be silly but isn’t the tile over a metal roof? I would assume the metal would keep out the rain and the tiles provide a good look and another layer of protection.

As J.P. Morgan said when asked about the stock market, “It goes up and it goes down” or something to that effect. I will say the same about expats in Costa Rica and you can quote me on this; “Some stay and some go home”.

Also you may pre-pay the departure tax upon arrival, just put the receipt in a safe place.

From the beginning of my search for property there advertising turned me off, even before finding this site. This was just based on a gut feeling, the “control $60k in Costa rican real estate with $25K” just sounded off. But at times I gave them the benefit of the doubt, with all that money why wouldn’t they build out the infrastructure in a timely manner as it would only serve there own interests. They could point to one development and say look what we did, just like we said.. finished, paved roads, utilities etc..that’s what the “infamous” folks I bought from did and it has served them well and they silenced there critics. But it has been years since there chairman came on this site and proclaimed they were for real, but as they say the proof is in the pudding and there ain’t no pudding! As I would say in this forum what’s the big deal if you have all these millions of dollars from selling all these lots? Construction/labor cost are cheap in C.R. you just hire a contractor and say build this out, here is your time frame , finish a little early and you get a nice bonus? It seems these people just prayed on our greed, that some how this land would make you rich eerily similar to Florida land sales in the 50’s and 60’s.

dktu, hey if you happen to drive up to Columbus Hts. can you swing by lot 155. I planted like 14 trees on it in December and the company that was going to water them is not in business any longer! I know you had rain in January but has it been dry since? I am working on a new plan…

While near Jaco stay at a very nice hotel called “Costanera” in Playa Hermosa. You will get a very nice/clean basic room on the beach in that price range. And if you’re lucky Nada will open the restaurant and make you some great pasta or lasagna. Spanish, Italian and some English spoken. Nada and Stephano 506 643 7044 tell them Keith says hola!

I’m certain your friends misunderstood this, check with an attorney and I am sure they are referring to the maritime zone of 200m.

I think what makes this deceptive is the fact that regardless of what the media is printing most of us with some experience in Costa Rica know the track record of the government. An experienced and knowledgeable builder in this country would also know that if they are talking about an airport now…maybe we will see it in 10-20 years. So an honest builder might mention there is talk of an airport but not tout it as a done deal. I do agree there appears to be many unsophisticated buyers who are buying land sight unseen and this is just plain foolish. On my way to Dominical/Uvita a few months ago I saw some signs for projects that are advertised on the web and Tico times etc. Boy I would be really shocked if I sent money based on the website pictures and renderings and then was driven out to some of these locations! I don’t always agree with Scott but with his web site he is protecting people from themselves and making the foolish mistake of wireing a whole lot of money into someones account for property they have never seen in a country they have never been to. The advertiseing in my opinion is deceptive but Lot’s of people selling things are deceptive, go down check it out for yourself then decide and buy it assuming there will be no airport and if it does get built great! I bought in the Central pacific near Jaco, yes the highway was mentioned by the developer, but I had been going to the area for over 5 years I loved the drive over the mountains. Now they say they are staring construction for real, great news for my girlfriend she gets car sick…so what I will save maybe 30 minutes? But then I won’t be able to get a great casado and eat while looking out at that breathtaking view from that little soda up in Atenas.

I don’t know David if this approach would work. Threat of death has not worked and some prisons really are like hell on earth in the U.S., the Americas etc..but still they rob and kill. I think a combination of all the above education, punishement, drug treatment etc..I think the level of torture one would have to inflict on a “criminal” to put the fear of god in him/her would be beyond the limits of civil society.

It seems most homes on the Caribbean side are wood built. When considering wood I thought fire and ease of breaking in were concerns to consider?

In Play Hermosa/Jaco in the Opera Salvaje neighborhood someone built a beautiful home of wood. It has a Bali/Asian design it’s very beautiful if you are in the area pull in you can’t miss it.

Check Jo Stuarts column in AM Costa Rica. I think she was staying in something along those lines and I believe she researched others.

It has been listed for sale in the Tico Times as well as with Real Estate brokers. I don’t mean individual condos…the whole project is up for sale. I was there in December and it was abandoned with what looked like squatters in the shell of one unit.
