I sincerely appreciate your interest in giving me the names of the two in Grecia. BUT….Fortunately, something was on my side and I found a nice 2 acre finca…..nice 5 bedroom 3 bath house. I got it on an option to buy. I have to fall back on the old saying “It just wasn’t meant to be”…….now I found a place much nicer and in Grecia…..I actually couldn’t be happier! I really wasn’t too keen on Alajuela, but it was a great house….big deal huh!!!.
I’d like to meet you some day Rick – we sound like we are both bad judges of characters lol – we have that in common anyway! lol

I know what you’re saying, and others have said basically the same thing………BUT………..I’m 62, and I don’t want to live the rest of my life wondering who’s at the door, who’s on the phone etc. I camE to C.R. to retire and enjoy! I have enjoyed myself, with the exceptions of a couple “touches”, already discussed…

If I were younger, I would do exactly as you stated………..this lady deserves a kick in the rear and staying in her house, causing HER some grief is probably what she needs.

Our friends are looking in Grecia for us……so that’ll be where I’ll end up…..I really lik Atenas, but dang, each family must have 10 dogs…..in my area “Villatenas” there are 10 houses and when all the 34 dogs bark it’s like living in a kennel……….

Thanks TicoGingo, if I was about 20 years younger, this “..T..” would have a fight on her hands…..I’d be doing exactly what you and others suggested……….

PS ANYONE KNOW OF A NICE 3/2 HOUSE IN GRECIA FOR RENT – QUITE AREA OUT OF TOWN……..

Yup, bad luck is right – but I have to blame myself first…..I’m just too trusting. I thought I had a qualified lawyer to do the residency (wrong) – I thought I had a qualified real estate rep, which I did and still do, he’s offered to bare the losses, but I won’t let that happen, it’s not his fault. The lady that is at the head of the table in this rental mess is who I should have watched a little closer, I shouldn’t have been so willing to fill her plate with the money………and the friend that got into my wallet – again my fault…………..I am learning a hard lesson! I have other wonderful tico friends…..I can’t put everyone into the same pot here. I was riped off in the US too…….but got tough-skined and I’ll have to harvest a tougher skin here in C.R. ALL SAID, I STILL LOVE THIS COUNTRY, 99.9% OF THE PEOPLE AND ‘THIS FORUM’……Thanks for you thoughts!

One thing I didn’t want to do was to generalize Tico’s……I also have a few that I consider very good friends, personal boundries set!!! It’s like friendships in the U.S. – we split dinners, go to each other houses etc – not at all one sided like my problems friends.

I was taken advantage of a couple times in California….but by someone who I didn’t open my heart and home to. I had an auto stolen in San Francisco, but I guess my feeling then were – what do I expect in SF. In this case, I gave house keys, gate openers etc. at one point “he” suggested I give him one of my ATM cards just in case I need “him” to do any banking for me. Not even thinking “he” may have ill intentions, I would never have done that. His wife suggested that I write up some kind of a will as to who gets what of my “stuff”. I questioned that and she told me that so many North Americans die in Costa Rica without wills and that people just ransack their homes etc. I told her I have a will and she suggested I give her a copy…….I started to wonder why the will and why the ATM stuff……and this was after they had gained my trust.
Oh well, I’v learned……….Thanks for the input

Unfortunately they do have keys and a gate opener…..I have requested their returned, but they don’t reply to my “phone messages”. I do have an on/off switch to the gate, so it can’t be opened with the remote now…..my house is very secure, so hopefully they won’t attempt to use the keys, should they get into the yard. I did tell them “via phone message” that should anyone enter this house that they will be the first one the cops talk to because only they have keys………..probably can’t frighten them, but I tried.

When I got this house I still lived in the states, “he” suggested he and his wife move in and watch the house……I thought, great idea so I welcomed the idea. They sent me an email and said that they’d only charge me $300 a month for watching the house and it’s furnishings………..I thought, well OK……….now I find out that $300 is a months salary for some. He was recently fired from his job for stealing…….then I doubted it, knowing how rumor spread, now I can surely believe it. I will have all the locks changed this coming week since he has made no effort to return the keys etc.

Last month I got a “refund check” of $500 from my transport company and he said “The bank will hold it 30 working day, so let me cash it thru a friend for you and you can give me $50 bucks……….I said – OK….thinking they might be needing money……I was the sucker, I know that now…….but it’s not going to happen again……I will not consider Tico’s to be like this family……But, I will be a lot more careful.

I mentioned the rings etc – his wife almost begged for a few of the rings…..I thought, well what can I do with them, so I gave her probably $2000 in rings and bracelets etc. I think this could have gotten a lot worse had I not checked on the cutch prices.

I live in Atenas, and I also checked out Grecia, San Ramon, etc. and decided on Atenas. I would suggest you’re renting a house for a year and use that year to search out the area of Atenas you’d like to live. Many like “Vista Atenas” – my personal choice is “Roca Verde” and there are other areas too. I choice a “Quinta” just outside of town. I like the older homes charm with established green areas etc. Good luck – Atenas is a Great Choice…

Your so right. do your “homework”………I did a lot of reading and a lot of questioning here in your forum.
As I said my biggest help was the person I had with me to communicate in Spanish for me…………and…………I have nothing but time, I’m a retired building contractor from California, enjoying this wonderful country!!!
As you might recall, I had such a problem with my “move of good” here to Costa Rica, that I wanted to basically “have control” of the outcome of my residency papers. With my move, everyone but me had control………it wasn’t a good thing at all!!! In a nutshell, I’m out about $18,000.00 and of course the blame was all put on customs!!!
